I believe one member of NewBuddhist goes to a college in Colorado. Though, I haven't heard from her in a while.
  • I PM'd Now-Is-Reality weeks ago, and didn't get a response. She's not checking her account here.

Hey there!:) Thank you so much!
I am going to Detroit, CO for 3 days. Thursday-Saturday. December 1st. I wanted to go to Wyoming. Cheyenne, WY. Was wondering how far it was from Detroit? It's for work. I will be driving there. I will be renting a car.

Um...Leon? Detroit isn't in CO. Did you mean Denver? And bear in mind that you may well run into major snow in WY. Friends tell me there's not much snow in CO right now, you're lucky it's a mild winter so far. I don't imagine you have much experience with snow/ice-driving, being from CA. Just take it really slowly if you run into snow. Enjoy your drive. CO is beautiful! But the drive across the desert (NV) to get there is boring.

Yea, sorry! Denver* Wow! I have to start paying attention!Well, I was born in Russia. I came here when I was 9. I have experienced snow. Been to Lake Tahoe and Alaska.

Cool! Yeah, but when you were in Russia, you weren't driving a car in the snow. I got a snow-driving lesson when I moved just south of CO, still in the mountains. Write us about your trip, ok?

True!:) Thank you! I will take some photos and definitely post them here:) I also write on http://www.leonbasin.net. So keep checking back on there:) Mostly in poetry form.
  • You could stop overnight at Tahoe on your way to CO, if it's not snowed in, I doubt it is. There are motels on the beach.

Yes. Lots of people live there. Mostly Coloradans, but a few seasonal inhabitants :)
  • @Leon What cool job flies you in and out of Denver, and pays for a rental car?

Rental Car, Hotel, Food and Air Flight. Mosaic. Marketing/Merchandising.
  • That sounds like an interesting job. Psychology has applications to marketing and merchandising, you know. You may already be in the career path you've been searching for. :)

Really? Maybe you right! I was working towards becoming a Social Worker, though. So... Far away from that!

Didn't you have a thread where you said you'd decided against social work, you wanted to be into Industrial Psychology, or something? Social work at least is a steady paycheck, but it can be kind of boring, bureaucratic paper-pushing. Anyway, you might look into opportunities for advancement into a position that allows you to use psychology (sales, or marketing), and start gradually working towards that. Maybe if you get an MA in pscych, you could also take some marketing courses. Or get an MA in marketing, but add psych courses.

Yea, I was going for Industrial, but then realized that I would probably have to cut my hair. Lol. Also, I noticed that its' really focused on greed and the like. Social Work at least provides help to communities and one on one. Yea, Marketing would be fun, but it has to be a company that does something good. I want to work for a good cause and nowadays, that is definitely hard to find! I don't think I will pursue a Masters, as the cost is insane! I just heard that they are increasing tuition again!:( I am not willing to go into 50,000 debt! Thank you! If you have any other tips, ideas. Let me know!:)
  • Okay, plan on needing a lot of water and probably more food (alternately you will be tired at elevation). In Denver some free/cheap things you must check out are 16th street mall (open mall downtown) and if you get extra time driving up to red rocks or boulder where the hippies hang is great. The capital building is near 16th street and is [pretty cool, protesters are in teh park across the street. The first Satruday of the month is often free at Denver Art Museum, and the zoo maybe the first Sunday? If you are vegie check out Mustards Last Stand, great hot dogs with every fixing and vegie dogs as well. Pretty much everywhere you will see the mountains, that is how you know where west is. Directions are generally towards the mountains or away.

Okay got a lot of typos but you should have a blast, this is the best 'home' I could imagine.

I was thinking that if you liked the company you're working for, and they like you, and you let the higher-ups know you want to work toward a psych or marketing degree, they might help you out with the tuition. But I must be dreaming. They could easily hire a qualified person off the street with a ready degree. So much for promoting from within.

Social work could be very practical and secure, if you can get your foot in the door, state jobs have good benefits, and of course, as a helping profession, it would be very Buddhistic. I wonder if it could be frustrating, too, because the system doesn't always respond the way it should to kids in a bad situation, and tragedies happen. But I shouldn't be talking you out of it, the job has lots of plusses.

  • I love the social worker at my son's school. I almost got him in the door today!
  • When and why did schools start having on-site social workers?
  • Not sure when, and the why is everything from personal counseling to college prep to whatever they need. I am not sure every school has one or full time (we do not have full time nurses) but there usually is a psychologist or counselor or nurse. We also have in many of the schools I work in a family laiason who speaks spanish and works with families and community.

Schools have always had counselors for the reasons you describe. Usually they have a psychology degree of some kind, educational psychology. I got the impression that at some point an additional need in the schools had developed. Social work usually involves working with the family as well as with the student, which is why I formed that mistaken impression. Thanks for clarifying.
