Diamond Way buddhism

edited November 2011 in Buddhism Basics
Can anyone tell me about this group. Is it genuine Vajrayana?I have no experience about Vajrayana but have been at Kopan monastery in Nepal and DW is pretty unrecognisable at least from my first couple of visits to their centre. Is it reasonably possible that someone can step straight into Tantra without any preliminary training ?

  • Have you Googled Diamond Way Buddhism and/or Ole Nydahl? I suggest you try doing some internet research first.

No, one can't step straight into Tantra without first learning the basics about Buddhism, to say nothing about preliminary training for Tantra. DW uses the promise of quick entry into tantra to attract members.

Nydahl is quite a character. He's got quite a following in Eastern Europe. I met him once and read some of his books. I must say I quite like the guy and haven't heard of any abuse or anything. He's a follower of the "other" Karmapa (Thaye Dorje) and so is not recognised by mainstraem Vajrayana, but there are a few Tibetan and Western teachers who also follow that lineage.

On the question of quick entry into Tantra, it's a whole other topic, one lama will tell you preliminary practice is necessary, others will say you can jump straight into it. Probably depends on the teacher and/or your own capacity - there is no one rule for all, although in general Ngondro (preliminaries) are recommended.

But - I refer you to the great oracle Google for more.
  • Shamar Rinpoche, who observed Ole when he was studying with the 16th Karmapa, and has heard plenty about him since, posted on his website that Ole was running a sex cult and had distorted the teachings. He took that statement down or modified it after Ole threatened to sue him for libel. (I can't imagine Ole could win such a suit, since he admits publicly he's had sex with over 500 women.) Some of the East European women have written books to expose Ole and his abuses. More potential libel cases. We'll see if any of them make it to press. One is writing in German, another in English. According to these women, Ole is the Karmapa's go-to-guy when he wants sex. Women have complained that Ole uses hypnosis or something like it to try to get women to have sex with the Karmapa.

That's interesting. I knew he had quite liberal sexual life but wasn't aware about the allegetions, and about the Karmapa and sex. If that's in fact the case then I would stay away from them.
  • Why don't you try some other Tibetan organisations ?

I was going to suggest another centre to the OP, but I cannot bring myself to it. I used to have high respect of tantra. Now after reading those revelations, and other things posted by @Dakini and others on this board, I have serious doubts. I don't know what to think about it.
