Okay, Hell is real and we are all damned to it.

But what is Hell? Hell is eternal suffering, right? Oh, wait, Buddha found a way around that. And since Hell is eternal, we have an eternity to practice Buddhism in Hell until we are enlightened and free of the suffering it holds. Psssh, silly God. We found loopholes.

If Hell is a place created for people who don't blindly believe and worship a 2000 year old Jewish demi-god that has mounds of evidence against the supernatural claims found in his holy book, then I embrace it. If this god created a place to torture even good intentioned, kind, generous people for the simple fact they did not believe in him, then this is a god I would never want to worship. If this god sent Ghandi, Buddha, Einstein, every Buddhist, Hindu, and Pagan who ever lived, then wow, Hell sounds great.

Part that stands out to me "Why is Buddha in hell" ? "He had good ethics practice and so forth"

Because he didnt believe in the eternal god...

Ive heard this one before sounds to be B.S
  • I have not read too much into Christianity, but why would it be that if you do not believe in God, he/she simply casts you into hell. Is he some sort of evil entity then?
  • I can't help but wandering: why did you post this video? Is it likely to help anyone? I followed one of the links on their website, depicting a very strange view of buddhism, one that could easily have been corrected with a few hours of honest inquiry:

    http://www.bibleprobe.com/buddhatoldofjesus.htm

After reading this, it's clear to me that I should have no confidence in their message, whatever it is. (I'm not against criticism of buddhism, as long as it's coming from people who have respect for the truth, and these people seem to be very biased).

The Christian argument: the greatest evil is to deny God's love.

    Something like that. Lol.

These stories are distributed widely among Christian circles. Many people new to Buddhism and coming from Christian families have bogus stories like this thrown in their face from otherwise well meaning friends, and they even come up in casual conversation with people who know nothing about Buddhism, so it's always helpful to bring them up here and discuss exactly why they are nonsense, in my opinion.

This one surfaced in a Christian magazine some years ago and like all such urban legends, refuses to go away. I actually had my mother send me an email that contained it some time ago. So I did some digging around on the net, and discovered it was, as usual, filled with obvious false details and mistakes that prove it was written by someone vaguely familiar with the country but obviously not a native and certainly not a monk. A good list of reasons why it's an obvious fabrication can be found at http://dhammaprotector.blogspot.com/2009/04/athet-pyan-shinthaw-paulu-back-from.html

By the way, my mother is a Christian minister and she immediately dismissed it as a fake when she read about the monk being dead three days and starting to decay and coming back to life. Christians who really know their faith understand that in their teachings, only Jesus has the power to raise someone from the dead, only Jesus has the power to come back from death on his own, and this monk was claiming powers that only Jesus has. I'm proud of her for not letting the appeal to condemn Buddhists get in the way of her logical thinking.

    "Advanced Ideas"?

  • Another Christian flogging. Why do we do this over and over? Our concern should be our practice, not what others think of God or Jesus Christ. OP was very interesting but it got twisted, again.

Right, right. We're oppressing the Christians and just taking shots at them every chance we get. Just because this video says that I, my friends, and my girlfriend are going to burn forever in Hell doesn't mean anything. It means I should respect their beliefs and stuff. Yep, yep. Makes sense to me!

Elisha raised the dead and was taken directly to heaven. Where does that put him?

Also, Christianity as Christ taught it is the same as Buddhism. Jesus was merely bound by his culture. He knew Jewish concepts and thus explained his oneness with everything as oneness with God. Buddhism has a similar concept. And Jesus being resurrected... The importance of that is that the body is not a worthless husk.

Miracles mean nothing. They are in every culture. It's nothing to be venerated. If anything, it distracts us from a higher goal.

These, of course, are strictly opinions. They don't help lead to enlightenment ;p

Even if the monk did resurrect, I must ask the significance. Didn't the Buddha talk about miracle workers?

You're wasting your time when you concern yourself with what others think about your future. It's just a good opportunity for idle chatter.

    Namaste

  • @MindGate, as per Existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre' "Hell is other people". I guess that might include Christians ;)

I'm wasting my time talking on NewBuddhist. I'm wasting my time playing Skyrim. I'm wasting my time watching TV. I'm wasting my time having idle chatter with the waiter at a restaurant. I'm wasting time taking extra long at pooping just so I don't have to get up.

You see, life is FULL of wasting time. I am a kid. I have nothing productive to do. I don't have a fulfilling project to work on. I don't have a job to do. No. I just waste time. That is all I do.
  • "Idle chatter" is something monks need to worry about. Those prohibitions are nothing but rules to help run a temple smoothly. In the lay world, it's called socializing and communicating. It's not wasting time.
  • I still consider gossip to be something that should be thought about before taking part in. If you do not have something worth saying, then shut up basically

:banghead: It pains me to read this.
MG, use that brain of yours to come up with a cool project. Or sign up for extra classes in your cyber-school program. Your school isn't challenging enough. Or see if your local garden store will give you a few hours/wk. of work, come spring. How are your driving lessons coming along?

  • A misspent youth is a waste, the only thing you can really take from it is a lesson, not to waste time lol..

Gardening is actually something I rather enjoy myself, even if you are working at a garden centre you are doing something productive. When you finish a day that has been productive, you have a sense that you have acomplished something, and that in itself is great. The thing about gardening for me is that you are looking after and raising something living. I guess I prefer it to wanting kids, they do not shout or mess you around, when and if they whilst you are alive, it is not much of a loss etc.
  • Meditation can certainly be called a huge waste of time by people who only see someone doing nothing. Otherwise, the most active life can be the biggest waste if it's nothing but selfish goals.

Active or not, any life is wasted only if you have no purpose beyond your own survival and accomplishment. So, what is the purpose of your life? If you can't answer because you have no purpose, then make finding one your task.

@sid, No, the Buddha DIED around 500 years before Jesus. It pays to learn facts before expounding them... And it's 'Bieber'.
And this thread is three years old. It's pointless reviving it.

Oh and welcome, by the way! :D .
