I can see your dilemma but, alas, I cannot make choices for you.
No dilemma Simon I stated my choice, I would stop the person from hurting you.
I would, of course, do the same for you or anyone else. By not carrying a weapon, I would ensure that I did not risk using it and I hold my own life of less account than another's. Carrying a weapon, it seems to me, is an 'occasion of negative karma' (to paraphrase).
Fortunately, the founders of the country had a little more wisdom than to believe that good governance was simply the "spirit of the times" or whichever way the wind was blowing. They purposely made it extremely difficult to amend the constitution and undo past amendments. Not to mention they made it extremely difficult to pass legislation. Mercifully, they also established checks and balances, so that even in the presence of a mad dictator, the apparatus of government would be too unwieldy to control easily.
Why not toss the 1st amendment while you're at it? I mean, people say such hurtful things and get off scot-free under the guise of free speech!
Do you really have that much faith in the government that it will be there to protect you in a pinch? In in a situation described by Theswingisyellow, would you rather be in the friendly company of fervent anti-gun rights folks or those NRA extremists?
