Things Are Changing

It is inevitable, change. Here in Thailand it is common now for monks or nuns to sleep on beds, eat meat, have money and even ATM cards, and I have seen a couple with phones. In my opinin, when the buddha became enlightended and his followers at the time, his monks, they all followed what he said and they listened, practiced and trusted him due to what he acheived. I have this feeling that if this trend carries on, that even monks and nuns changing in this manner, the rate of liberation will keep decreasing and maybe our religion will change vastly also.

[Monks] have money and even ATM cards...
    10th precept is now void?
  • I guess so, depends on the monk and the sangha. Here in thailand people are more obsessed about money than in the west believe it or not.

I have heard horror stories from a woman I know whom has known countless stories of male Westerners being ripped off by Thai women. This is not particularly Buddhism related, so I digress... pardon me.
  • nono. you are right. I myself when I first got here got drugged and lost my apple macbook and about 900 english pounds from some thai women. Trust me, thailand on the outside seems so buddhist and innocent (apart from the prostitution side of things), but every thai is so money orientated.

I guess the simple answer would be that they need 'pulling back into line'.
But that's over-simplifying things to a nth degree, isn't it?
  • You cannot control the weather, and you cannot control the mass change that occurs with this either I assume. I often want to go up to them and say, 'why do you have that money, you are not allowed it' or something like that, but it is very rude to question a monk like this here. On buses and trains, if a monk wants the front seat, the thai will quickly get up and let him have it. I have seen monks smoking as well lol.
