It occurred to me during my meditation this morning that I have (of late) lots of (what seems to me) senseless chatter going on in my mind (who doesn't?), and realize that I spend countless hours going over old conversations or planning out future ones. Is it avoidance of the present or is it possibly something else?

It's simply called 'Monkey Mind' and absolutely everyone, without exception, has to deal with it.
You just notice it more because your effort to meditate, and to be mindful, is more apparent now.
it hasn't actually increased at all. You have simply become more aware of it.
Maybe that’s what meditation does.
Everything in our mind is just happening there – is just passing by. And because we are meditating; the normal process of identifying with all that stuff is not happening.
Meditating is “dropping off body and mind”.
Aaah. That's because you've obviously been doing it wrong all that time, then......
Just kidding.....
Nothing stays the same.... we all come across different aspects and factors in meditation, at different times.... maybe this is just a new development for you.
And that's ok.
Don't sweat it, or get stuck on it.....
