A Shrine Question.

edited December 2011 in Buddhism Basics
Hello, all.

I'm new to the forum, and have been enjoying it immensely!

I have a question that I hope someone can answer.

Can I have more than one altar/shrine? I don't want to "overstock" my altar, so can I have two tables set up?

Thanks!

Yes, but they must not touch, or be able to see each other or else thy will conspire to start without you.....

    Just kidding..... :D

There's no problem with having one in each room, if that's what you want....

My husband (who is not Buddhist) thinks I should have a little statue, or picture, or something, in every room. He maintains it will remind us that sacredness can be with us everywhere....

I had set up one in our spare bedroom, and I had just purchased a nice carved Buddha for the desk... well, at the same time my daughter came to visit, so I temporarily put the Buddha on the bench at the end of our bed in our room. Well, my wife liked it so much that I think I will have to find another to go in the spare bedroom when I can figure a way to get my daughter to leave :)
  • I would like very much to have a Buddha in my home, but they are so expensive :( anyone have a lead on a good website?

I would think it would be nice to have a shrine in any rooms that cause you suffering - home office, kitchen (if you hate cooking like I do) and so on.

I enjoy the site www.buddhagroove.com and they have many lovely statues at various prices.

  • Oooo thanks for the heads-up! The site has a lot of really beautiful things. :)

DonB72, I apologise for hijacking your thread :(
  • No problem, Raven! It was a good question!

    And thanks for the responses!
  • If you want Buddha statues at a good price, you might look around for small import shops in your area. While they will tend to have a lot more Hotei or the fat laughing Buddha, most of them also have a selection of traditional Buddhas. In my area, there is a place at an indoor flea market stocked with loads of statues. Don't neglect to bargain.

In Thailand, in the home there is usually only one Buddha per person, and that is placed on a high shelf or other object. But think about going into a Buddhist temple...there might be dozens of Buddha statues.

The one thing the Thais are very much against is using a Buddha as decoration.

However, just remember that the real purpose of the Buddha is as a focus point for mindfulness.
