Insight on breath meditation

edited January 2012 in Buddhism Basics
Recently, a student asked a meditation teacher
about a problem he was having noting his breath.
'Everytime, I note my breath, my breath became
strained and unnatural'
Teacher: 'If you point a camera at someone,
he will become self-conscious and behave awkwardly.
But if you leave the camera there for a long period
of time, he soon forgets about the camera and goes about
his business as usual.
Similarly, in the beginning, you are not used to noting
your breath. Of course, you cant breath naturally.
But if you keep doing it, be patient, the breath will
return to its natural state. Be patient and persevere.'
The answer helped the student tremendously.

Dont forget about all the thoughts about travelling round the
world and being the next steve jobs.
When breathing there is only breathing.
  • Breath meditation is a good way to keep the focus on the body. It is pretty amazing the things that you notice physically and mentally just by watching the breath.
  • I start every time I meditate just counting my breathes so I can get my mind in the correct view.
