Magic Mushrooms

I am not pro-drug, but I did find this article interesting... maybe more interesting then the effect of this drug is that we are aware of the area of the brain that creates our ego

"In other words, the regions affected make up what some people call our 'ego.' That activity decreases in the 'ego-network' supports what people often say about psychedelics, that they temporarily 'dissolve the ego"

"The scans revealed a surprise: Psilocybin never increased activity in the brain, but only decreased activity in places, especially information transfer areas such as the thalamus, which sits smack in the middle of the brain"

"Knocking out' these key hubs with psilocybin appears to allow information to travel more freely in the brain, probably explaining why people's imaginations become more vivid and animated and the world is experienced as unusual"

  • It is similar as that of a dead person brain. Just that it dysfunctioning it temporarily through drug. thalamus is merely a physical aspect for medical study to identify part of body function, otherwise, there is no basis to further establish brain damages. it that does not necessarily means the body is controlled by brain. For instance, if you suffering itch on your hand, medical study claims it transmits to your brain that feel the itch. so it is your brain that itch, you should comfort your brain instead of comforting your hand.

Another instance is the documentary on scientists experimenting dalai lama students on activities of tranforming brain. theses complimented highly on dl extraordinary brain transformarion but did not crave for meditation to ascertain their own brain transformation, and just using gadget to test on others with the intention to write books to profit from the experiment : D they have not been using resources and their youth wisely to benefit themselves ;) it also creates inconvenient for dl student on their continuous flows of meditation to benefit mankind :D
  • I don't think it's possible to generalize how people react to hallucinogenics. Everyone's brain chemistry is different. For some it's a quick path to bliss, for others it's hellish.

I agree... this study shows the reason for increased flow of information, which includes decreasing activity in the ego region, but yes, it would make sense that how we react to this sensation would vary.
  • Artificial reality.
  • The idea though that the brain has a function of controlling how much information can flow in is interesting... a good thing I'm sure, to protect our sanity
  • Yep, also akind to LSD, I watched my friend lose his ego totally, it was scary enough to watch. He did not know who he was, he said things like 'I have hands, I have a head,' and so forth in a very surprised manner. He ended up going home against my word because he was in no state to be around people, especially his mum. His mum ended up crying because he was so weird and he was taken to hospital because she thought he would never come out of the effect.

Psychedelics can be fun, but they also can be a nightmare. They are also an illusion, they do make you see the world in a different light and sometimes you do have realizations about yourself and life that are pretty outstanding, other times you will end up laughing for hours with no reason what so ever.
I watched a video about how LSD came into being and they had a variety of scientists on there, much of which were know in their later years and much of which had tried LSD. One of them claimed that the chemical makeup of LSD (which is similar to that of psilocybin found in mushies) is found broken up in different parts of the brain naturally.

Buty of course, you can use these drugs as much as you like, but true hapiness and liberation can only come from within. I myself have had a few bad trips, I dare not take LSD now-a-days even if it existed in Thailand because of my natural mental state of mind, and also the fact that I do not have the same views that I did five+ years ago as I do now.

Here is a link related to your original post about loss of ego, or as they refer to it, ego death. Some of the comments are interesting

  • I wouldn't bother if I was you. You probably do not live a sheltered life, just a decent one :p
