taking a tiny chance, and career stuff

Sothe teacher job fair comes up in March. It is limited to 500participants. My sister had pretty much talked me outof going because she says how teaching is right now is so stressful. But talking to one of the ladies who took over half of my job I realized that the extra 15K ish a year that teaching would bring in is sure to put a LOT of stress aside. Plus many jobs in myfield (out of school time care) are more available with 2-3 years of classroom time.

Meanwhile I have my good days and bad with the changes at work. I miss my kids and staff, but not the write ups. i had togo back and do a write up today because it was my successors 3rd day. Ihave already tried to teach all the licensing for childcare rules super fast! And I have a few tiny projects to do at least.

just really really keep up the good thoughts wherever my job is that we get a large financial boost this year. It is just waaay too tight. If you have been there you know you can cut expenses for only so long and then things wear out, teeth need work, and you just get worn out of it, but I feel really good opportunities to do great work and earn what I need on the horizon

Heerdt, I'm a little suspicious of your sister. I wonder why she talked you out of attending the job fair? Is it too late to get on the list? I'd get on the list, so your options are open. You can always decline if you decide teaching's not for you.

$15K/year more? OK, what are the cons? Maybe with your meds it might be too much stress? Is that the concern? That's a solid concern. What age range would you be teaching?

It's a water-dragon year. All wishes will come true, they say, a very auspicious year. So be careful what you wish for. Is there an administrative job you could do, that wouldn't have you in front of poorly-behaved kids for hours all day? You've been very good in the training and admin dept., it seems. A desk job might be best for you, just thinking out loud. What about curriculum development as a field? Or special ed, for gifted kids (they're so much easier to teach!), we've discussed that before.

Great questions and wonderful advice like always from Dakini!:)
  • Thank you Dakini, My sister deals with pretty decent anxiety and even with meds has had to tell her principal that she cannot have observers in her classroom, She comes home every day in anxiety. That may be part of it. Plus honestly my family has seen me in some pretty bad stress situations so it is ok for them to have doubts with me handling stress.

I did do the registration last night. It could be a teaching job or it could be a connection for the current field of after school care. Honestly my district has the best in the state of comprehensive after school care. Like you said, I can always turn something down but I can't go back and re-do the connections I may have lost by not going.

So they are looking at more opportunities next year however what is on the table right now is opening 4 new schools and giving me one as the site coordinator/program specialist. That is following the community school model and I know I would like it. However I assume the pay will be aboutwhat I currently earn and so I at least need to look at that. What I would love is to supervise one level up on all those 4 schools and I think the pay would be in line with my basic needs for income. I am not sure that is a positio they are thinking of but my supervisor has 9 schools and is really really busy. The otherr side of our program (parent paid tuition) has less work involved because they do not meet grant requirements, don't need to search for funding and don't need to do all the surveys to show higher test scores, parent needs for ESL classes and school requests.

So I know where I really want to be but I also am making a huge focus my minimum pay with chance for advancement.
  • Hey all, I checked teaching jobs in my district and saw one at a school that my friend superrvises after school care for. So I found out the assistant principal is teaching the class right now. I will get the resume spruced up and make a visit very soon.

Meanwhile I have a pretty broad focus of work and a very specific focus of earning requirements
  • Hope things work out for you, @AHeerdt!
  • Tell us more, Heerdt. What's the subject you'd be teaching? Kind of exciting. : )
  • sounds like 4th gradein a turn-around school. I don't know if this is even possible since they want a proven track record. But I am finally willing to try after years of of rejection, worst case I still have a job and a career potential.

and I am not not happy. the lady i highly recommended did NOT get one of my schools (she was the site coordinator for a few years, i can see they couldn't let her go) was leading a meeting that i was asked to attend with my former site staff. I was there to support because I was interrupted in the process. So we are meeting in the teachers lounge, there was snacks on the table like typically on fridays. Ms S moved all the snacks to the end of the table, fine. As people arrived one person moved the cookies to the middle of the table which prompted a 2 minute stern explanation of how in a serious meeting we cannot have distractions like food in the middle of the table. Meanwhile meetings always have doodle paper, fidget objects, etc. We play with kids all day, we don't sit like that often. I cannot sit still that long, in fact I got up a few times fidgeted but was totally involved.

I was fine then, but it is grating on me. I want to be childish and just say why? Really why her? i have to think there is something good to this, but when she was out of the room i heard people say how much they miss me. I don't care about my irritation but the staff I left behind deals with this every day, and this is her trying really hard.
