Pantheism

edited February 2012 in Philosophy
What do you think about pantheism in general and in regards to Buddhism?

Pantheism is the view that the Universe (Nature) and God (or divinity) are identical.

As I don't believe in god, that leaves nature, and I believe in that.
  • You mean like the golden ratio, 1.618, phi, sacred geometry and Fibonacci sequence?

If there is a God, he/she is passionate about math in nature..imho...very subtle.
  • If you consider the god in question to be Mother Nature, or Gaia, or some kind of abstraction that cannot be taken to task for the way things actually are, then I don't know.

But if you think of the god in question to be manifested in nature as it actually is -- who works in a practical way through evolution -- then that's a reall horror show. Sure, beautiful if you step back and look at it as an entire system. The logic is admirable. But in terms of what it actually means for those of us who are in that system, it's a nightmare.

We're evolved to suffer. Suffering is adaptive. We're evolved to be hateful and mean -- and to be hypocritical about being hateful and mean -- because these things are adaptive. In these terms, the teaching of enlightenment is a kind of rebellion against the prevailing system.

    Buddha bless,
