I think Lama Anagarika Govinda was the first German Buddhist monk. Nyaponika Thera was probably the first Theravadan German monk. Or perhaps they were contemporaneous. Govinda first studied Theravada under Nyanatolika Thera, a German Theravada monk who pre-dated Nyanaponika. He also studied with Nyanaponika, and later went to Tibet. This early German network of Buddhist monks is interesting.
