  • I'll add that most Buddhist quotations can be misunderstood. This is related to the reason for gurus. The guru has done the experimentation in meditation and they can help you avoid going wrong. Of course not all gurus are created equal and those who in turn misunderstand will confuse their students. The purpose of a lineage is to place a check on the guru in that they are scrutinized. And that can go bad also. If the whole lineage is teaching inert or even poisoned dharma then it has obviously gone wrong. And then of course like Richard Baker and Ozel Tendzin the students can be corrupt(er?) and deviate negatively from the teacher who has transmitted. It happens with popes also. A couple of them have gone crazy. Or at least that is what my friend, a nun, has said.
