Donate money to those in need, for free!

edited March 2012 in Buddhism Basics
Kiva.org is a website where you can donate money to people in third world countries for their house repairs, businesses etc. with one difference; they pay you back. It encourages them to work and get out of their situation. Currently they're giving out free loans. Click this link and they'll give you $25 to donate to someone in need, and after 6-12 months they'll pay it back.

I know this may seem like spam, but just Google it, it's supported by Oprah and many other high-profile people. It's a wonderful charity.

I've heard of kiva. It's micro-lending, but with a more personal touch. It's supposed to be quite good, effective.

haha--now I see what you mean, plutonic! When you posted "Give away money--for free!" I thought, wtf? :wtf: Give money away for free?! But you mean you get the money back eventually, then you can roll it over into another micro-loan to help someone else. I get it.

I've signed up for the free trial; I'll see how it goes; but I'm more than happy to lend money for a good cause. I've been skint enough myself to know how that feels.
  • Hmm good idea, my dad always does Heifer Project for the grandkids. He got them a water buffalo one year! That is a big deal, Hard to explain to other kids that grandpa did not send a goat to our house but instead it is going somewhere in Africa or Asia.

I will check out, I think the idea of self sufficiency and micro loans is probably good for self esteem of the recipient as well.

micro-credit started out as a way to empower women. It works.
