  • Nice, but I won't be getting one. I can see a huge black market for games without a disc drive though, also pirating games. However microsoft probably has thought that over a million times. Why has apple never made a games console?

You may die but your gamer profile will live on forever!

At the bottom of the xbox article, a link to the article below - the picture of the boy with his dad made me chuckle...

  • This is why I have all but given up video games and the consoles that require them.I see no point in spending oodles of money just to play 1 game. On top of that, if LeonBasin's article is true, that type of gaming system is an open door for "game rental" fees by use for that system -- A definite turn-off for me. I like my systems when I use them to be stand alone so that if the company's servers are having an identity crisis it's not an issue for me.

As to a gaming black market, that is likely to happen any way. More so perhaps for this new system since it will be closed architecture and therefore just begging to be hacked by enterprising individuals.

Discs haven't made sense since even before Blu-ray. With a 64gb flash for pennies, why go through the insane expense, licensing, and DRM involved with pressing Sony-licensed Blu-ray discs?

The ONLY reason the next PlayStation will have a Blu-ray drive is for movies. I wouldn't be surprised at all if games didn't come on discs. The cloud is where it's going.

The thing is...The second hand market is dead. Many gamers exchange their games in order to buy their next game. As a new game is $40-$60. Who can really afford that? And you and I both know if it's online and we have to download it, the price will not be coming down.

    Correct!
Nuuuuh I don't like that. And what about people who have painfully slow/no internet? Also: this makes me suspect that a subscription to xbox live will be mandatory just to download some (possibly most) games. I hope this fails miserably so Microsoft goes "whoops, we did things a little bass-ackwards"

I'd like to see a return of the cartridge days. They are reliable, simple, and resilient to damage. And with today's technology a cartridge for a game like Skyrim would not be much bigger than a gameboy cartridge. It just hit me. With the way this is going, my xbox 360 may be the last console I ever purchase...

Maybe it is time to make a switch and join the glorious master PC gaming race.
  • The gaming industry is like the comic book industry: doomed to a slow, agonizing decline by their all-too-human drive to complete control. See, at some point a successful company stops asking the customer what they want, and instead begins dictating to the customer what they have to do.

    Oh no they didn't...

This is crap. This means that they can always get the profit for games and they will cut out the middle man resale shops like Gamestop. I almost never buy games when they are new with their $60 price tag so I am not happy about this.

@Zayl Cartridges! Remember when all you had to do to fix it was blow in it? Try doing that to a scratched CD, haha.

Aside from the Wii games I play (but I am HIGHLY skeptical of this Wii-U thing), it has occurred to me that most of the games I enjoy for the Xbox started out as PC games. Hm.
