NB Minecraft server?

don't know if any of you play Minecraft. But if a large enough group of you do. Perhaps we should start a nice little private server for us all? There we'd be able to play the game with each other and set up towns, forts, amazing monuments, and explore the world together in a peaceful fashion. I don't know how to create a server myself, but I'd be willing to help out anyone that does. Plus I think it'd be kind of cool, we all know each other from here so we could all just hang in the server from time to time, and chill.

Anyway post your thoughts if you have any. I'd be interested to hear any ideas you might have on it.

  • I've never really looked into minecraft. Is it just... playing with blocks? Like www.roblox.com ?
  • Is this like farming? From Facebook, not pharming like addicted to pills...although!

    Bazinga!

Haha, well it is sort of playing with blocks. But you have to manage resources (Chopping wood, mining ores.) To make different tools and items. Which you use to improve the situation around you. There are monsters (which can be turned off) and you can hunt for food else you starve (this can be turned off, too) although if you do not feel like hunting, you can farm different vegetables and wheat. Or you can go gathering mushrooms and apples in the forest. The worlds are massive and randomly generated. They are so huge that even a decently sized town is just a drop of light in the overwhelming wilderness.

You can honestly play the game without harming a thing if you so choose. You can even re-plant the forests you cut down (forests grow back in time on their own, but it takes longer) And with very simple and easy to install texture packs, you can make the game look very pretty. I think it would be nice to share a community. Literally build a nice walled village together where we can explore an untouched, wild world. While showing our artistic and philosophical side in the process.

You can do anything from run a store or a blacksmith, to build outposts and homes for the needy, or what have you. Everybody needs items and food to survive if you have that option turned on, so it is a good practice of compassion. Someone shows up on your door bedraggled and starving to death, do you invite them in for food and a bed, even though they may be wielding a rather disconcertingly large sword?

Natural events occur too, completely at random due to other events. Forests fires may occur due to a volcano or simply a battle getting out of hand, or a misplaced torch. Will you strive to save the forest with buckets of water, or let it burn itself out as a process of the natural order of the world? I want you to understand these worlds are MASSIVE you can walk for hours in one direction and not reach the edge, if there even is an edge. There are massive underground cave systems, abandoned mines filled with treasure or monsters. Old forgotten fortresses containing arcane secrets... In a world like this, with a community like ours, how would we handle it? would we have intrepid adventurers going out into the wild, bringing back rare items that will benefit the community? and what of those that stay in town? they can work as cooks and healers, builders, repairers, item crafters, etc.

Just something to think about. You can check it out at
    www.minecraft.net

And here is a little screenshot of a place I built. When I came across it, all it was was a tiny island in the center of a group of larger islands. Over time I kept adding onto it to form the citadel you see here. I added a pond, planted lillypads, planted trees, made the fountain, and yes that is a giant mushroom. A giant mushroom you can go inside of like a building.

As you see it, night is just starting to fall, and it is raining. Outside of these walls lie legions of monsters not far away. So I seek shelter here at night, and only return during the day to craft items or add on more to the island.

  • Sounds cool. Gonna get it.
  • This is kinda like Sims...but with Legos...cute, even the rain is block like. How do you Ger this game? Is this like an emulator rom?

@Lady_Alison head to http://www.minecraft.net/ the game will cost you roughly $15 or so, and it is a download. You create an account there so if you go to another PC you can download minecraft there as well without having to pay for it again, so long as you use your account. It is sort of like the sims but it is a first-person game. There are randomly generated NPC villages as well. They sometimes undergo a zombie siege, so you can either steer clear for your own safety, or you can try to defend them the best you can. You do not even have to fight the zombie horde to do this, you can save the village by doing something as simple as building a town wall.

And yet another vid, this one showing how multiplayer can go down.

The game is 27 dollars, not 15. At least that what it says on my screen.
  • Mt son plays this.. he talks about being "griefed"

I tried the free older version. It is creepy when you dig down and find caverns and just keep going down until you get lost...
  • ZaylZayl Veteran
@Bekenze Hmm they must have raised the price from when I bought it, sorry.

@RichardH Yeah that happens in some online servers where anyone can join and it is more widely known. If we managed a private server we could set up a whitelist. Which is a list of allowed players, everyone else who is not on that list can't join. Or we could apply a password for entry. And I hardly think anyone here would grief, at least not too terribly. But hey if they do we can remove them from the server for however long we want.
  • Sounds like fun... can't let my kid know. He would take over and hog the account. He takes over every fun game I try. :D
  • ZaylZayl Veteran
@RichardH Haha, well if he already has an account then there is no need for him to steal yours, amirite? :D

Here's some more screenshots from one of my games. Here I'm building a stone city on the edge of a very large and treacherous jungle. I'm building it out into the ocean a bit since clearing out the jungle would take way too long unless I burnt it down. Plus it is much easier to defend against mobs (monsters). It's a work in progress and is still expanding. But not bad considering there was just open water there before.

  • I love minecraft. I was hooked on it for a while. I switch between mc and skyrim.

I'd be interested in a NB server. But I wouldn't know how to setup servers.

The current server I play on is generally "nice". Good Moderators and Admins, has a bunch of mods (commands and extra functions), reasonable rules and policies. They have some grief protection. Moderators and Admins can roll back your "blocks" if you've been griefed.

I'm not very good at building stuff, but I still enjoy it. I like exploring, and I like how mining is so unpredictable.

Would you mind posting the IP of that server? I've been looking for a good one after the last one I played on got shut down.

I showed my kid this thread, and he just shrugged. Then about twenty minutes later he came back and said " I want to go on that server too" .. I said "oh oh here it comes, you just move in slowly ...then take over my fun stuff" . He thought that was very funny.
I told him he isn't allowed on unless he is studying the Pali Canon. He said " I don't see you studying the Pali Canon". Little smart-ass, I can never win.

  • ZaylZayl Veteran
@RichardH haha, I take is that means you made your own account? if so join up with the server Still_Learning posted here, I started playing there and there are lots of nice people. I even made a player city for people to live in (pictured below) I call it Kurast, since my inspiration for it was the city from Diablo 2 of the same name. We have a farm, a residential district, a public courtyard, and my palace which also serves as the town hall (The big pyramid) I only have one other person living there right now, so there is room for people. The town isn't exactly monster proof, but I'm working on that. It is in comparison, a LOT safer than the surrounding areas, though.

Icrontic (the other site Brian & I own) has a Minecraft server. Check out the Minecraft category on that forum: http://icrontic.com/categories/minecraft

Mention you're from NewBuddhist if you decide to participate.
  • @Zayl

cool, I'll definitely look for you in the server, my mc name is benderbot5000.

Currently, I don't think the "permanent" map is up yet, so a lot of the server add-ons and commands aren't available yet. As a warning, when the permanent map is up, you'll have to start all over. A permanent map generally lasts for 2 or 3 months, or the next significant mc update.

  • ZaylZayl Veteran
@Still_Learning yeah I know, I'm considering this town as a practice run. I've already got a few people interested. It'd be nice if I could get enough to get official city status.

Icrontic (the other site @lincoln and I run) has a thriving Minecraft server. There are quite a few people who play, and the way we run Icrontic is very similar to our values here: no griefing, no being a jerk, be nice, be cool :)
  • I feel left out...need home internet. Lol...must nag husband...

It goes down at 2pm ET every day for backups.

@Lincoln no, I try at other times and the message is always the same, even though it says I have a connection to it. It just gives me an "Internal Exception: Connection Reset" dealio.
