Death to apostates (the Afghan man who converted to Christianity)
Hello,
A few days ago I saw on the news about a man who converted to Christianity from Islam in Afghanistan, and he was going to receive the death penalty. This is completely wrong.
There is no verse in the Quran about killing apostates.
However, there are some texts in the Hadith which talks about killing apostates. However, these Hadith about killing apostates do not apply in this day and age.
During the time of the Prophet, the Pagans constantly fought the Muslims and the Muslims had to defend themselves. There were some hypocrites among the Pagans, who pretended to convert to Islam, and after learning about the battle strategy of the Muslims, they left Islam and told the Pagans about the information that they stole from the Muslims. The death penalty only applied to these infiltrators, because they helped the enemies of the Muslims to fight the Muslims.
The death penalty for apostates can no longer be applied now. It was only applied during the time of the Prophet for the hypocrite infiltrators who leaked information about the battle strategy of the Muslims.
In Islam, there is no compulsion in religion:
"There is no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things." (Quran 2:256)

You're welcome. Some Muslims themselves do not understand this, as you have seen in Afghanistan.
