Poem for class

Just This

Thus have I heard;

On the occasion when pain,
lamentation, and despair
have been fostered by the hindered, tangled mind,
it is pertinent to be mindful of
the nature of all things, such that you comprehend the truth that

THIS IS SUFFERING
This body, this sensation, this perception
This fabricated mental formulation
This cognition is your suffering
as is birth, aging, sickness, and your death.

Greater, even, is the mindfulness
of the truth known, comprehended, and uprooted
by the exalted self-perfected Bodhisattva --

THE CAUSE IS DESIRE
That constant thirst and craving
That undying lust and hunger
That itching that won’t ever go away
With fever we want more and more,
We seek change, and more sensation
And even some desire their own death.
But, wanting never ends it,
for in fact it feeds the fever,
like a drug that feeds addiction,
we’re it’s slave.

And so,
the Tathagata,
wise and lucid, has proclaimed

THE CESSATION OF DESIRE IS NIRVANA
The final blowing out
The unbinding and uprooting of the cause!
The final liberation from the bondage of samsara,
this twisting, endless journey of despair.

But highest truth of all,
is the salve that heals the wound,
the stone that breaks the chains, and
leaves the candle pacified without a flame --

THE NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH
Skillful living and compassion
Right View, Intent, and Speech,
Skillful Action, Livelihood,
Right Effort, Mindfulness, and Concentration
Thus he said, “I teach only suffering and its cessation.”

  • Do you get comments from the other students or teacher? Be interesting to know what sort of comments you receive on something like this.
  • I gave it to them yesterday and they will be giving me my feedback on tuesday. I'm excited to see what they think.
