This brings to mind a conversation I had with my stepdaughter just yesterday, when I told her people vastly overestimate how much their skills and decisions have to do with surviving in life. The story from the link quite honestly points out the girl was lucky to survive, mostly. Between the stupid things we do that looking back on it, could have killed us, and the sheer chance involved in something like a plane crash that could happen to anyone flying, life is pretty much a matter of beating the odds.
So where does karma come in? Well, when it comes to karma as fate, it doesn't. Life is a series of maybes, of chances more or less that something will happen due to our decisions. If you gamble in a casino, there's no guarantee you'll win or lose one particular night, but if you continue to gamble, the odds eventally catch up. The only way to be certain of not losing is to not make the decision in the first place.
But life contains surprises for all of us. If we knew when and where and what form, it wouldn't be a surprise, would it?
