Colorado Fires

I am amazed that the fire season started so early, not a good sign. We usually get a heavy amount of snow in March and that is a major part of our moisture to get through summer. The fires are visible from south Denver metro as I understand, and the evacuation area includes my favorite close hiking place. I am attaching a map,. if you see HWY 285 and Evergreen that is where I lived during high school. That area is not evacuated but my high school friend had his former family home burn down a few years ago.

I love the hike in Roxborough SP. Is that the one you are talking about?

  • I go to Meyer Ranch Park, it is on the north west side of the fires. It looks like Roxborough is more on the south side, but it really isn't far from the metro area. I have to still sometimes remind myself I live in the city and I used to be south west.
  • My little brother lives in Evergreen. He says they can see the smoke from the house but they have not been evacuated yet.
  • Evergreen is so beautiful, except for the fire thing. Is he closer to 285 or I70? I lived off of 285 and North Turkey Creek Road myself
  • AMH you live in Evergreen? I used to live there before I moves to Chicago. I was also in Breckenridge this week (just got back half an hour ago) and we have friends that still live there. I saw the smoke a little when we were driving past Denver yesterday.
  • Dang it. so here is the deal, anyone passing through Colorado send me a message. I am actually in Denver, 3 miles from the zoo at this point. I spent high school in Evergreen and none of my friends are still there but sometimes I hike in the area.

Yeah let me know if you are passing by. From May through September I try to have a backyard BBQ once a month or so because I have a prettyu nice back yard.

I just read that the CO fires are due to prescribed burning by the state, and the state just suspended all such burning. That's why they started so early in the season. They were deliberately-set fires for forest clearance that got out of control.

    Yes, that's correct.

It's really a shame. A few years back I was traveling south from Flagstaff and as I drove through the national forest there I was amazed at how "clean" the forest floor was. I asked a ranger what the story was. He said they kept the forest floor as clean as possible of dead wood in order to cut down the fire risk. A tougher task...I guess burn-offs are easier, but far more dangerous.

  • I think that it would be worse if the fire started on the west side of the contential divide since there is massive amounts of beetle kill where about 90% of trees on a mountain side could be dead.

Amazed? This should have been expected due to the effects of global climate change.
  • I have lived in colorado off and on since '82, so yeah I am surprised. This is months before fire season, I usually cannot get to my fave compground in April because of the snow. But being from a controlled burn makes more sense. There was some discussion about whether or not it was from a controlled burn, sounds like it has been established.

    Hi!

Yes, the Colorado Forest Service has apologized for it, and there is currently an investigation to establish if the decision went through the proper chain of command and why such a poor decision was made based on weather forecasts.

  • As one who was potientally at risk but fortunately only came away with a few days wasted because of evacuation by comparison to others who lost everything thanks to this:

I wish all of you who live near that fire, or have loved ones near there well-being. It's very hard to keep a calm frame of mind when you can see the halo of wildfires only a couple of miles off and even at night a very large column of smoke which looks like a ghastly clone of the himalayan mountains

Not at all. The fire was started deliberately, as part of a program to clear scrub and thin the forest for future fire prevention. It was only a week ago that we had snow here.
