I don't think many of those are computer games, Tom. There's a difference between "computer game" and "video game." Computer games are video games... played on the computer. Context is veeery important.

Not in the UK lil Bekenze. They are called computer games, it is you yanks that coined the named video games...
  • Nes and znes Roms can be found online and played with a remote control connected to USB port...so I've heard! I think it's stealing, though.
  • lol, you cannot beat the sounds of mario. I use to have a rave style remix of the mario theme tune when I was younger

Yea I use to have ones for the snes and n64. They are called emulators. I may have to download a few actually. When it comes to downloading stuff I am not too bothered to be honest.

Age of Empires with expansion packs. A classic,,, with beautiful graphic details right down to turtles lounging on logs in marshes outside of town... and along with that...

Age of Mythology: Titans. A simple, bright, and colourful virtual world.. great music.

Rise of Nation: Thrones and Patriots. Old game, fun strategic play in the Napoleonic age. loses it in the modern era.

Spore... A very flawed game but a great idea, with beautiful music by Brian Eno.
The first (and shortest) stage is the best. A microbial water-world.

Generally RTS games with a map editor. It is always fun to create a landscape and scenario, and balancing it for the best AI play.

  • @RichardH did you ever like the age of empires where you went from basically a cave man up to the point of nuclear war?

Age of Empires 3 was a real work of art by Microsoft's Ensemble Studios, but it did not advance beyond the age of colonial expansion.

There are other games of that type that do.. but they always seemed like pale imitations to me.

There is another similar game from a German developer called The Settlers that has fantastic graphics but also does not advance into the modern age .

Rise of Nations advances into the modern age,... but the graphics are not to scale (like the Civilization series) and the modern effects do not work well...

There are plenty of sci-fi RTS games that have fantastical weaponry .. it does not interest me much.

I don't play often.. my kid took over everything.

Actually, I found a Popful Mail emulator a while back. It was so nostalgic for me, brought a little tear to my eye since I thought for sure that game was lost to the world! But... as a random side note... I never got that far in it because there was a glitch were it couldn't be saved and also... that game was a lot harder on a keyboard... sheesh.

I've always played a lot of video games. My mother was really into computers and taught me how to access my video games through MS Dos on super old school computers. Before that we had a Commodore 64 (this was the mid 80's that we got this). But my father was more into console games so we had regular Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega, Sega CD, Sega Gamegear, Nintendo 64, Playstation, Playstation 2... I was raised by geeks. So I guess what I'm trying to say here is that I've played a lot of video games... really.

  • lol yes, I was 1988. there are many more I would like to post above 5 like mario cart, snow boarding kids, turok, and xtreme G, you know with those futuristic bikes. The first one was way cool. I may try and buy an N64, but first a Tv is needed hehe
  • I never had sega, I played it with friends, but that is all. I also loved the oldskool GTAS and also gran turismo.
  • by the way @zombiegirl in 007 goldeneye, did you know about this far away island thing on the dam level? I could see it with my sniper and there were many rumours about it, but I never got there..
  • zombiegirlzombiegirl beating the drum of the lifeless in a dry wasteland Veteran
Mario kart for the super nintendo was really fun, but mario kart for the 64 will always be my favorite. I also liked Waverace for the 64. Turok was a great game also :)

I just downloaded Ocarina of Time and Starfox 64 for my Wii (same game, just on the Wii). Starfox is STILL a blast after all of these years. Ocarina of Time is pretty cool, but my girlfriend has it with remastered graphics on her 3DS which is a little more fun. I feel like I should just get a triforce tattooed on me for the amount that I love Zelda.
  • I love zelda, I have aways thought it has been way way ahead of it's time on so many levels. The N64 version especially. The fact the day turned into night etc, the sheer vastnes of the game, it was a great story line, you cannot beat that. Ahhh nastolgia

I had no idea what you were talking about, but I found this:

Although he's clearly using a cheat, it would appear that there is nothing substantial on the island. I hope I didn't shatter your dreams... lol.

I think the reason I like Zelda so much is because it doesn't give you all of the answers. There's always a secret key or something you need to shoot or whatever to solve the mystery. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's difficult. Sometimes you need to talk to that ONE PERSON in town AT NIGHT or whatever and they will give you the secret clue that you never would have figured out without that piece of information. I feel like so many other RPGs just hand you the whole answer or give you a glowing trail or warp you right to the area you need to be and while you miss out on a whole lot of frustration... the fruit just doesn't taste as sweet.

Such a tough question! I cant really categorise a top 5 as I love things in their context and I love a lot of things... sort of equally but there is a time and a place for each...

    perhaps by era (sort of):

Pacman - on a handheld mini game machine - my first 'computer' game before computers - loved that game - level cherry completion... woohoo...
Donkey kong - orange flip game
Asteroids - blew my mind BBC Acorn - there were keys and shots wow
    Bruce Lee (c64) - obsessed
Rambo first blood / who dares wins - first proper top down shooters / incredible opening picture with 64k... it actually looked like a human being...
Syndicate / batman / robocop / shinobi - amiga (there were so many more)
Streetfighter 2 + various updated versions - SNES
Wolfenstein 3D - WTF? First person shooter - is that even possible?
    DOOM... oh yeah...
Golden eye - 4 player heaven
    COD / Medal of honour

recently Black ops (esp zombies) / battlefield / batman / assassin's creed / hitman / prince of persia / GTA (and various permutations of the sandbox)

ok - so I could go on about this all day!

Zelda: Ocarina of time was a multigenerational favorite in our home, the kid, parents and grandparents.

It also had a creepy dark side.... that guy mindlessly cranking that crank in the windmill... with that song going round and round and round and round.. nightmarish.

Golden Eye - can't go wrong with a classic.
    Diablo 2 (with LoD)
    StarCraft
Sins of a Solar Empire (absolute must if you enjoy RTS and have a system that can run it)
    Battlefield 3

I'm a PC gamer mostly, consoles have their limits. :)
  • I have found that a lot of americans are PC gamers rather than console gamers. In the UK it was the other way around. Check this it though...

I've met a bunch of parents that loved that game (my father included). :) Also, quite a few that love the new one, Skyward Sword. Speaking of nightmarish, I've never actually played Twilight Princess, but my girlfriend says that it was really dark and a little more adult than most Zeldas.

Oohh, I forgot about the Windmill song! I should see if I can download that. I already wake up to two different Zelda themes every morning.. the "Lost Woods" song from Ocarina and the theme from the SNES version. They make me happy. :) Also, my text message alert is Navi's "Hey, Listen!" Which is really annoying, but gets my attention.
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II
Indigo Prophecy (also known as "Fahrenheit" in Europe, I believe)
    The Longest Journey
    Fallout 2
It's been a long time since I have heard about KOTOR that I almost forgot it.. Bioware was doing some magical things with those two games. Making an RPG is always a balance on difficulty, puzzles, progress of the game, etc, it was incredibly engaging and a large amount of customization, and yet it flowed like a book..

Remember that consoles are computers, only with games as priority.
The classical NES was know as Famicom in Japan, this is Family Computer.
The first name for the Atari 2600 console was VCS, that is Video Computer System.
    An so on.

    My most remember games are:

    Super Metroid - Snes
    Monkey Island Saga - PC
  • ArthurbodhiArthurbodhi Mars Veteran
Oh wait, here are the other 3:

    Starcraft - PC
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night- PS1
    Silent Hill - PS1&2

Did you know that you can buy Super Famicom games, take a handsaw to a certain part of the plastic casing on the cartridge and do a little file work... and then it will fit and play in a Super Nintendo? Yep. Once upon a time I just HAD to have the Ranma 1/2 fighting game.
  • @zombiegirl thanks for the goldenvideo. I always wondered about that island and enver got there, but it turns out that it sucked anyway hehe. That guy has some weird cheats and is using a PC, so it must be an emulator or something. I remember having some cheats but never things like that.
  • Not Ranked:
    War craft II
    Legend of kyrandia series
    Sanitarium
    Populus the beginning
    Red alert

Thought of those games bring nostalgia.
Why can't we have top 10? 5 is not enough room. There are many games that are equally good.

    Ultima Underworld 1 & 2
    Ultima 7: Serpent Isle
    Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Elder Scrolls (been playing since Arena, though I skipped Oblivion)
    Nethack clones
    Fallout 1/2/3/NV

I've never been able to adapt to a console controller. X, square, triangle and circle, mean nothing to me, whereas mapping I for inventory, C for character sheet, etc. makes gaming easier for me.

I do wonder if I should be indulging in so much violence, even if it is fake. Maybe I should be playing Myst or something.
  • nakazcidnakazcid Somewhere in Dixie, y'all Veteran
Evidently I can't count. If it's important just merge the Ultima games, or ignore Ultima 7.
