Happy Songkran!

Today is the start of the Thai festival of Songkran. This is basically their turn of a new year, however the actual year still changes on the same day as it does in the west. There are dances, music, and the most notorious part of it is a 2-5 day water fight depending on where you live. Also people come up and spread white chalk paste on your face. Here is a video showing you what it is like.

Back atcha Tom - have a great, safe and wonderful time!
  • I have to ask. . . do thai girls wear white see-through t-shirts on purpose so that when they get wet, their boobies show?

It looks like fun... but why water and chalk?

I hated Songkram with a passion...liked the original meaning and traditions...but not the way it is handled today.
  • @vinlyn oh, it's like buzz fest!

    all booze and floozies!

Depends where you go, that is a generalization of a statement. The farang are actually most of the time the people who taint songkran from the times I have been here.
  • Have a great time!

What I hated about it was having to walk to the store and having buckets of water thrown on me.
  • @vinlyn...hahaha! I had a mental picture. You waiving your wet fist with a set jaw and scowl. "I just went out to buy dinner. DINNER! "....grumble, grumble.

"Some 144 people were killed on the first three days of the Songkran holiday with another 1,668 people injured in 1,554 road accidents from Wednesday to Friday."

This Songkran 2012video was sent to me during the week. I think I recognise that busy intersection in Bangkok ... how did they stop the traffic long enough for filming??

  • lol, maybe the traffic was stopped because of the sheer number of cars. Yes every year there are the satistics of how many people have died or hurt themselves, blablabla. This annoys me because it is like some thing people love to hear about each year. It is mostly due to drunk people and wet roads!

This year I barely went out, I know many farangs who did not go out for 3 days. I have been soaked a little, but it does get annoying after you have been here for a few years. In some places like Pattaya or Phuket, you get silly foreigners who go on into the night or will spray you as you eat your meal somewhere.
