motivation that causes suffering

edited April 2012 in General Banter
Just a random question that came to mind but would be interesting to know some answers or examples..

have you ever given someone motivation, WITHOUT knowing it that they would do something you did not want them to do, and it caused you to suffer but not them?

i honestly have no examples....just came to mind.

  • One thing springs to mind, but I am sure they suffered to some extent as well. I was only about 10 years old at the time, but I had this friend David. We were both pretty much good kids at that age but I had a few friends who were into starting fires and petty things. One thing they use to do was head up to this warehouse and steal the metal dustcaps from the wheels of lorries and keep them. I introduced my friend into this, sometime after I subsequently became swamped with a huge sense of guilt, it really knocked me sideways, even at that age. David went on to get mixed up with people who smoked weed when we left primary school and who knows, maybe he would have been a better kid if I did not introduce him to certain people or things to do...

I'm sure I have but I don't know about it...

I meant to add "but after the fact you knew that it was you who unintentionally motivated them"

  • lol I don't know if this is exactly what you mean but you reminded me of when I was a teenager and I first started getting into philosophy and new ageism. I told a friend of mine something about relativistic morality I think it was and he used it to justify stealing a pack of cigarettes...
