compassion method that works for me.

I've bought a wish pyramide. The day before yesterday.

I scribble little notes and put them in,
Wishes for others and myself.
I'm kinda messing up the whole concept of the thing. LOL

But it TRUELY helps me to place negative feelings 'outside' myself, and turn them into something nice.
For the first time i'm 'feeling' compassion, slowly arising, rather then 'knowing' it.

For me it works.
So. Buddha tought.
If something works, and makes you a nicer person..

Just do it
I am. And I really can't give a #$%^
if it's 'buddhist' or not.

Once it's filled up with compassion. I will take all my little notes out, read them one by one and throw them in a fire.
Nothing is permanent. Even wishes.

Cool. Whatever works. Thanks for sharing this.
  • exactly....it's not about the journey nor the destination..

it's about the interaction of both.
  • Random thought. I acknowledge that compassion is a good thing and even just an attitude of compassion but I find that I don't really have opportunities to practice compassion... Anyone else feel this way? I guess I could start volunteering but that's about all I know to do.

Opp'ties to practice compassion can arise at any moment, and don't have to be a big, save-the-world deal. Kindness and cheer in dealing with a cashier, or a co-worker. A relative that might need advice, patience and help with a problem. Passing along a referral to a good health care practitioner to someone who needs it. Sticking up for a stranger who is getting rude or racist treatment from some service employee. Compassion is about committing random acts of kindness. Once you open your heart to compassion and foster that attitude, you may begin seeing opportunities come up here and there.

Why are you getting defensive when no one even criticized you...?

Like @Dakini said, there are opportunities to extend compassion all the time, but they're not obvious. In fact, the goal is to make it so that one practices compassion "as if reaching for a pillow in the night." That is, effortlessly and unconsciously. Who knows, you might already be doing a good job!

I like the saying don't give a shit.

I'm going to add to my list: just being a good friend to your friends. It seems people are becoming more isolated, due to the demands of keeping up in a bad economy, the internet, etc. People aren't there for each other like they used to be (I'm wondering to what extent the ideal ever was true). Be a good listener. Lend a helping hand when you know a friend needs it. It's the seemingly small gestures that can make a big difference to people.

This is a great topic: how to practice compassion. Thanks to Zenmaster for this OP. :)

That's good to hear. I think it's good to be creative because we're all different. Have you looked at practices like Metta bahavana and Tonglen?
