THANK YOU ALL, so much - just for being you =)

I recently joined another online forum to discuss some other interests I have and found out very quickly that I ought never take for granted the kindness, compassion and open-mindedness that the members of this forum have and pratice on a daily basis.

I found that I had to constantly defend myself there and even had accusations made about how I'm not grateful for every day after posting just a few things - and things that I never imagined would lead to that type of thing.

So, I want to say a BIG thank you to everyone here. Although we may have different opinions about things, and though there may be some cynicism at times, I have always felt that people acted out of kindness and genuine thoughtfulness, not attacking or judging. And what a blessing that is. I am grateful for all of you and for this forum : )

Many, MANY Blessings to all of you,

KwanKev

  • I would rather you thanked me with chocolate at the moment, but your words are accepted :) On a serious note, I myself have found from other forums and sites a general sarcastic, argumentative and simply repulsive atmospheres. But here you can see the contrast quite easily when switching from place to place.

  • A deep bow to the moderators, also, who do a thankless job and have managed to keep this forum firmly in the right speech corner while allowing us to get a little intense at times.

Make that Earl Grey a decaff, and I'll have some with milk, please. :)

Yes, NB has come a long way since I joined, and it's very pleasant to be around, we have a great bunch of people. And the mod squad did a great job of chasing off those who were intent on disrupting our "equanimity" a few months ago. Keep it up, team!

I know what you mean, Kev. I dabbled briefly, before joining NB, on a couple of other forums, and it seemed like I'd crashed an exclusive men's club, or something. Let's just say...it didn't work out. If you don't sail by the prevailing winds, you can find yourself in the middle of a storm.

I have to agree as well. I was on a Zen Buddhism facebook group and I posted on a thread there. The meat of my post was on topic and rellevant to Zen but I ended it with a quote from Ghandi. "We must be the change we wish to see in the world" and I got blasted!

A few others I visited got pretty nasty as well. Here, it seems that if someone uses a curse word, it's in fun and we all seem to be mindful of right speech. This is something I am working on as it goes hand in hand with patience but as everyone here is polite even when we disagree...

It's just a breath of fresh air, is all.

Not to mention the fact that Buddha quotes are usually sourced here.

As Brian once said, if someone used a 'foul' word, in the context of 'wtf' or 'oh, i really fucked up today' - then he's really not too bothered.

    Me personally?
My own opinion is that I believe the use of foul words certainly has its place, and I have used them myself, many times.
But I don't personally believe a Buddhist forum is that time or place.

Part of the Eightfold Path, is Right Speech.
One of the Precepts exhorts us to be mindful about Speech.
The whole forum - bar one section only - is completely open and accessible to internet searches and perusal.

(I'm personally mindful of what observers might think, on witnessing use of such language...?)

We've got more than enough on our plates to be mindful of, without having to also monitor the potential garbage that comes out of our mouths, and being sure the context is appropriate, so why make life more difficult for ourselves?

Just don't do it, avoid it and don't even think it.

That said, however, Brian is the FF, so I have to take his opinion on board, he has the final say.

All I would ask is that people be mindful and aware of what they're communicating, and if it's gratuitous and unnecessary - particularly if it's aimed at someone, or with reference to someone's comment on the forum - I will step in.

Finally, in addition to the above - of course, if any members notice what, to them, seems gratuitous and unnecessary use of language, we trust in them to bring it to our attention by choosing to 'alert' the post.
We would also ask that any post you alert us to - you also avoid making any response or comment to, because that often begins an off-shoot discussion, and it becomes impossible to untangle the mess.

    Thanks guys - OK:

  • @federica - I agree 1,000,000% percent with everything you stated... just perfect : ) I think it's that view of the mods that contributes much to this place being 'safe' and civilized.

Thanks to you and all the other mods for all you do =)

    Many Blessings,

    KwanKev
