Would you rather vacation in NYC, Philadelphia or Key West?

I'm planning a summer vacation and I've narrowed down to three places that I want to visit: New York City, Philadelphia and Key West.

New York for the sight seeing and Broadway.

Philadelphia for its history and museums.

Key West for it's beaches and the fact that many people say that it's the closest you can get to paradise.

Where would you go to and what would be your reason?

All of the above for the reasons you stated...although there are a lot of places I think would be closer to paradise than Key West.
  • Having been to all three, I would say that the first two are spot-on, but the last one is ****way**** off the mark. The beaches in the Keys are okay, but the water is flat as a bathtub 99.9% of the time. If paradise is what you're looking for, most people ain't gonna find it in Key West. It's an interesting little town, and it even has a bit of history, but paradise it ain't. Good Cuban food though.

Personally I'd do Philly again mainly because it's been years and years since I was there, and I'm much more well versed in both the big picture history of the place as well as my family history of the place. My great-great-great-great grandfather was the keeper of the clock at the Pennsylvania State House before and during the American Revolution. His grandfather came there as a young man (with his two brothers) in 1710 from the Palatinate in what is now Southern Germany, and the family was there until around 1800 (when it got too crowded to farm).

I think I'm heading over to Philly later this week.

Philadelphia can be nice.. certain parts, I guess. I don't like the zoo, though. All the animals looked depressed or sick.

I really liked Philly. Of course you had to know where you could and couldn't go, but it was a city I liked walking around in.

Key West because of its history with pirates. No joke. But, I've never been to any of them, so I'll just keep my mouth shut, I suppose :)

I'm really starting to lean more towards Philly, the more I read up on it. However, what beach would you consider being closer to paradise @vinlyn and @Mountains?

I would rather take my canoe up the Opeongo river into Algonquin Ontario... or go hiking in Cape Breton Nova Scotia.... or Gros Morne, Newfoundland.

......if it was going to be a U.S. destination it would be N.Y.. which is a 45 minute flight from Toronto. I used to love the old Mayflower hotel over central park..(now gone).. It was a grand hotel at one time but later got pretty threadbare, which was charming. It still had those little french doors that opened to a very romantic view of Central Park.

I'd also like to spend time in the desert southwest... never done that.
  • There is only 1 beach in Key West and it is man made. My recommendation if you want the beach experience is Vieques Puerto Rico. I've been there several times and it is truly paradise.

    Ambergris Caye, Belize :)

But to stay on topic - how long are you planning on vacationing for, @DaftChris? I'd personally go to NYC just because I've never been and it seems like there would be a lot of stuff to see/do without having to stay in museums or whatever.

    @Invincible_summer

I think for about a week.

You're right, there would be a lot to do in NYC besides museums. I would see a play on Broadway, visit the Stonewall Inn, Coney Island, maybe see a freakshow...and a couple of museums, lol. I can't help it, I just love large collections of things; especially medical oddities. :) My only concern would be the size (I'm quite socially awkward) or ending up in a bad area. Also hotel prices!

I'm also looking at places more out west. Any suggestions anyone?

I'd want to avoid the hustle-bustle of a big city for a vacation. And FL would be REALLY hot in the summer! If you don't mind that, then explore other options around the keys or elsewhere in FL. But I might recommend as an alternative the San Francisco Bay area. Depending on where you go, you can ignore the city, and just hang out on beaches and hike in redwood forests, or you could do a combination, of the city for entertainment, museums, Golden Gate Park, but have a beach getaway as your main base.
  • "Out west" is a BIG place! My sister lives in Tucson. Loads to see and do in that area. And great Sonoran food to boot!

Ocean in Key West is like a brine bath, but as long as you have a pool at the hotel you are O.K. Not much to see there.
I want to go to NYC again and will not complain(this time ) about the humidity. Much to see here.
