Anybody want to talk about your character or experience?
My character's name is Hraakar and he is an orc. I use Two Handed Axe, Block, and Heavy armor as a damage/defense base. Warrior starstone helps me develope warrior skills. Alchemy is where I put extra gold I spend to train because it is a stealth skill and I have warrior star stone and not stealthstarstone. Alchemy is good with melee health regeneration and poison. I use conjuration and bound axe (summoned magical axe) to steal souls on contact (a perk of the bound weapon conjuration 'tree') which I then have a lot of filled soul gems which I enchant a bunch of trash items to level enchant.
I am putting my perk points into: the 2 handed weapons, heavy armor, block for one thing. With heavy armor and blocking the conjured autronachs can deal damage while I am just blocking the enemy. If they focus on my summon I can chop them. For burst damage on difficult opponents I use the alchemy poisons. And the bound (conjured) axe can chop up trash enemies and save the charges of magical damage on my regular non-conjured axe which means more burst damage.
I am heavily putting perks in enchanting and alchemy and smithing. I will make an alchemy potion that raises enchant. Then I will enchant an item that raises alchemy. Then a more powerful raise enchant and smithing potion. Then an enchanted smithing enchanted amulet/ring.
So I have a damage/defense basis with autronachs, bound axe for stealing souls, and a master crafter (alchemy, smithing, enchanting)
Warrior stone helps level: two hand, block, heavy armor, smithing
Extra Gold levels: alchemy
Bound axe easy steal soul and trash enchanting levels enchantment which levels really fast and is kinda imbalanced though it does cost money to buy unfilled soul gems.
Damage Base: two hand, block, heavy armor
Crafting synergy: potions and enchanted items that raise alchemy, smithing, enchant which makes leveling all three synergistic
Summoning synergy: healing via alchemy, heavy armor, block... while summon deals damage..
Burst Damage for boss: alchemy poisons.

Hi, I'm new.
Sounds like a pretty solid character. Alchemy and smithing are actually the two things I've not engaged in much, though I've made a thief with every intention of jumping on that. Well, the alchemy, at least. I confess the smithing and what not doesn't interest me terribly, much to the chagrin of my Skyrim playing male friends.
My main character is a high-elf and is what amounts to a battlemage; they tend to be my go-to in these types of games. She's fair boss, if I do say so myself - lots of explodey good time magic there. I recently made the thief, which I named Legend Aerie (thoroughly amusing myself), but I haven't had much time lately to dedicate to her.
Right now there's a cool looking mod in development called Castle Defense (on the steam workshop) - Where you defend your castle and can buy troops/upgrades for it! I can't wait until it's finished.
Do you play modded? What mods if so?
In Oblivion I used OOO, (a) realistic leveling mod, Less Annoying Magic and Race rebalancing, and maybe a few more I don't remember. But I had under 10 mods.
I'll see how much time I have. Amalur is a charming game and I played that to completion. It had funner combat and less realism but the fantasy setting and lore was decent. So I just mention Amalur to say that I might spend my time on other games.
I still have several from the early 2000s and late that are good games that I never beat. Right now I am on the Yuan-ti temple in the top down DnD adventure of Icewind Dale 2 by black isle studio. That game is really fun. Good writing of story though not quite as good as Baldurs Gate 2. But it's much different than this generation of 3D graphics, much more tactical and intricate like 300 different spells and 10 times as many monster types.
Unarmed combat.
I wasn't used to the Favorites system at first, so I didn't like switching weapons and spells. I made my character a one-handed weapon specialist and had a healing spell ready in my off-hand. I didn't put much into smithing or enchanting. This was my first playthrough and I just wanted to play the main quest to see the ending.
My second character was a sneak-archer. This was much more fun. Being a weaker character forced me to be more creative when taking down enemies. I also spent all my points on Stamina and none on health to impose a challenge on myself. I also explored more with this character.
I started a 3rd character after sneaking got tiresome. This one was a mage, and I'm focusing on being a master at the destruction spells and conjuring cuz they look so cool. I'll try to do the all the Winterhold quests asap to improve in magic faster or get more magic related gear faster.
My second character was a level 18 Nord named Hemch. He was into heavy armor and big swords.
Just found this thread by accident. I can't help necro-thread'ing this one!
I've played several characters, obviously and of all kinds. Today it struck me, that I've never tried playing a "true" Buddhist in this game. I thought it might just be possible.
My character is an Imperial because of the "Voice of the Emperor"-power which will stop aggression. He is bald and has a mild expression.
The first obstacle is the intro, naturally. I managed to not kill or harm anyone by just hiding and letting the NPC-helper (the Imperial) do all the killing.
I did not pick up any weapons or armor. The rest of the game with this character will be played, still adhering to a Buddhist ethics: No stealing, no harming, no selling/making of weapons of any kind, no lying, no intimidation, helping everyone - but only in peaceful tasks of course, no intoxication or selling of intoxicants etc.
It will be accomplished by using:
Illusion spells: primarily Calm, to simulate that he's using the words of Buddha to turn aggressors
Restoration spells: whatever keeps my character and others alive
Sneak: to get by aggressors unseen
Speak: to get out of trouble without violence (random thief encounters etc), and to raise initial disposition towards my character, mimicking his charisma.
Alchemy: To make potions (not poison!) to sell and consume
I consider looting already dead animals and people OK, since the clothes and other stuff they carried can't really be said to be theirs anymore. As such, I do not follow the more strict "touch nothing which isn't yours"-interpretation of the precept.
My character is still wearing the rags he got caught in - the back story is, that he travels in this outfit. I have allowed him putting on a monk's robe if given one.
He refrains from any ornaments.
Main income is selling ingredients, mining and selling abandoned gear which is not weapons. Later he will make potions.
He may take up forging armor.
Secondary income is from quests, of which I haven't completed any yet. I have this idea, that later he might be able to complete quests of the "retrieve stolen item"-kind, by using pure stealth and Illusion - calm, muffle, invisibility. I think helping people get their stuff back is OK from a Buddhist point of view? It's still up for my personal debate though.
He does not pay homage to any gods, but he has taken The Mage Stone.
His main drive is to experience the land of Skyrim (part of his travels of all of Tamriel) in a Zen-kind of spirit, while helping all living (and unliving!) entities reach peace-loving goals, trying to make the world a better place.
I'm a little confused as what to do about the First Precept in dealing with undead beings like skeletons and Draugr, but I guess they will be spared too, adhering to a non-violence path.
The game is played without subtitles and music, without fast-travel and without cross-hair to make it more realistic and enjoyable (something I've done with a few other characters now, and it works so well!).
You will all doubtless be relieved, I am sure, that I shall not be moderating this thread AT ALL, largely because I do not have the vaguest idea what any of you are actually talking about. Computer games and I go together like a carrot and a combustion engine.
And don't ask me to explain that, either....
I love anagrams @Jeffrey, not sure whether they help raise you a level or two in SKYRIM
it's my risk but although the game irks my ideals, it makes me perky and smirky
No moderation - cool!
...Of course, on the other hand, both @Linc and @Jason are honed experts at such things and are on hand to do whatever's needed.... .
I play skyrim, but it's been a while. My laptop won't play it and the one computer that will, is the one my husband usually uses. We had some issues with the computer overheating, and I stopped playing out of frustration, and when I tried to go back realized that 6+ months off playing a level 38 character was too much of a leap, lol. I started a new character (a kajit if I remember right). I love all the ES games, though I have not playing the online one. My hubby has and wasn't terribly impressed.
I actually let up to a year pass between playing a character. Mostly because I usually don't have the time for an immense game like Skyrim except on holidays Sometimes I forget who they are, though, which is a bit sad
I played a lot of WoW and Oblivion in between and I couldn't even remember how to use the maps, LOL. I still have the character, but I started a new one to get a handle on the game controls again. Any other game, I just shut off when I get hungry or whatever. Skyrim (and Oblivion and Morrowwind, too) I might forget to eat for hours. I have to be careful with those games or I'll lose 10 years of my life, lol. I always wanted to make an extra good character, one who kills only as a last resort, and so on. Pretty hard to do any of the quest lines though, and the Dark Brotherhood quests are my favorites, so that doesn't jive, lol.
After the ' furry subculture ' exchange I am nervous about asking..but what is ' Skyrim ' ?..
Only one of the most epic RPGs of all time It is the fifth installment of a long running, immensely popular series of games called The Elder Scrolls.
What I personally find very appealing is the opportunity to play the game almost any way you like, exploring the vast country as you see fit, doing almost anything you like. People and creatures are convincing and have actual "lives", keeping their stores or farms and houses.
With the technological advancements the last ten years, it is now possible to make game worlds so big, that in Skyrim for example, it will take an actual, real life hour or so, to run from one end of the country to the other (east-west).
You can be a horse riding, flame-throwing, axe-wielding, heavily armored knight from Hell, preying on all who is weaker. Or you can be a pacifist traveler like my new character.
(or a zealous priest, sneaky vampire, mighty wizard, good-hearted barbarian - anything is possible!)
can I be a duck?
You are limited to a selection of humanoid species, I'm afraid. But that's the only limitation! Well not the ONLY, but almost!
My character is a cat-human...so maybe @Citta your furry fear isn't far off...LOL. No hanky panky like that though. I chose the character type for speed and stealth. You can also be a lizard-human.
Damn. I so wanted to be a duck. Ah well, that's me out of the game. I am inconsolable. no, really, I am. Honest. I am.
Aha !
@karasti, your hubby is right about Elder Scrolls Online I wasn't impressed either. To tell the truth I'm pretty bored with MMOs these days there all WoW clones. I am looking forward to Everquest next though, its pretty sandboxy by all accounts.
I play an Orc thief/assassin in Skyrim, I use the Orc so if I flub my stealth moves I can use the berserker rage power to get me out of trouble.
No ducks at all unfortunately @federica though my wizard character did have a zombie chicken at one point.
Real men play Dark Souls.
(That said, I love Skyrim)
Thanks, everyone :P Due to this discussion I loaded up a low level character on Skyrim that we have for our Playstation and spent the morning playing that!
Also, we have Demon Souls and Dark Souls and they both make me cry. But I'm a girl so no worries on being a real man
Hi @Jeffrey ! I'm a fan of elder scrolls as well!
My current character is a lvl 40ish Breton. 100 illusion, sneak and close one handed. They never see me coming
Except for those pesky dragons...
Great game! Hard game and have only played 1-hour of it. Any suggestions to getting full experience out of the game?
@LeonBasin Walk everywhere, try to avoid the fast travel system as much as possible. You can buy a horse to make travel quicker this way. When you walk everywhere, you tend to run into little sidequests or interesting situations. Not to mention small villages and other settlements, but large burial crypts or ancient fortresses with their own story and history.
It's all about how you go about doing things, instead of just getting them done as quickly as possible. Right now I'm playing as a full on Paladin, with heavy, golden armor (Dwarven) a sword which does extra damage to all matters of undead, as well as healing and shielding spells, as well as spells which can harm or ward off undead. I just find it fun to go about helping just about anyone I come across, it's damn profitable too.
Like @Zayl says, it's really just about making a character you like and then experience the province of Skyrim. I'm all into the "not fast traveling" - it really makes for a much better experience.
And by making a character you like, I mean you should think about who he/she is, why they are in Skyrim (why did they get caught along with Ulfric Stormcloak?)
It may be, that your character is a thief, who was about to steal from the Stormcloaks when the Imperials found their camp. You could be a fighter mistaken for a Stormcloak. A priest who was preaching to the Stormcloaks. Or maybe simply a wanderer seeking his fortune, just passing by when the Imperials came. Oh oh, or a bard who came to sing and entertain the Stormcloaks.
What would your character do once free? How does he view the Imperials?
It can be overwhelming when you see the size of the map and aren't familiar with the ES games that came before it. You don't need to play them all, it just helps to know how things have built up. Skyrim is a very, very extensive game. There is no right or wrong way to play it, you'll pick things up as you go. Wander around and talk to people, join factions, there are some really fun and interesting quests. You find the more useful items in ruins/dungeons and so on rather than buying them in shops. The dragons are tough. Early on, run for your life unless others are there helping, lol. When you finish a long dungeon/ruin/whatever, make sure you listen and watch at the end where you beat the boss person for the glowing blue script on the wall, go stand by it, it's what gives you shouts, which are magical powers you can use for various things. They are quite powerful.
Some people like to blow through the main story line as fast as they can and skip the side quests. For me, the glory of the game is IN the side quests and the factions (thieves guild and assassin's guild specifically). I take my time, walk around, explore, pick herbs and flowers, all sorts of things. My first character, the one I hadn't played for a long time, I played 104 hours on the character and still had not finished the main quest line and was not close to completely even a majority of the stuff in the game. I suspect one could play easily 250 hours if they wanted, and more because factions will keep giving you quests to do. Then you try a new character, and the way you do quests changes completely.
I haven't played skyrim since the original post here. My character was a heavy armor 2hander orc who harvested souls with perks to conjuration axe. Then all the souls went to level enchant. I made a smithing, alchemy suit and alchemy smithing and alchemy potions. So basically I hit hard and had good gear and potions. Best is when enchant maxes at 100 you can just enchant your end game and use the legendary option of de-skilling enchant to get the perk points back and level it up again just the same to hit higher levels.
I beat the main quest and sooner or later I am going to finish the imperials/stormcloaks quests and maybe try one of the DLC. I think I am going to go for the imperials because the stormcloaks are racist and I am an orc.
Thank you all for the tips! I will try all these out:)
I play WoW but I sure do love this post
I play WoW too, but good gravy I'm bored with the island and waiting for the expansion.
I hadn't tried the werewolf feature yet, did with my new level 9 gal, took me forever how to get it to change form and what buttons to use to attack, LOL. Didn't realize it was considered a shout. So much confusion, I died doing the quest to find the redguard woman in whiterun. Love skyrim
