A warning about taking Allegra (fexofenadine)

edited May 2012 in General Banter
I'd never taken any of the newer generation antihistamine drugs until last Friday. My allergies flared up, so I sought the advice of a pharmacist on the best OTC med to take from among the new generation. She recommended Allegra (fexofenadine) as being effective and relatively quick acting.

I took a dose (180 mg) on Friday and one on Saturday, and by Saturday night I was in the midst of the deepest, quickest onset depressive event I can ever recall having. This morning it dawned on me that it might be the Allegra, so I did some searching. Turns out there's all *kinds* of anecdotal evidence from all over the world about this. I didn't seek out any clinical research, but my experience is enough to convince me.

So just a warning - if you're prone to depression *at all*, don't take this stuff!

I am also having some seasonal allergies. Thanks for warning me. I don't usually take anything. Benadryl just makes the mucus thicker and doesn't really stop it in my experience. Plus it makes me drowsy.

Do you have stomach reflux? Sometimes the acid which can be a gas (HCl) can irritate your mucus membranes. In that case TUMS helps. That has helped me out in the past.

Mountains, also check to see if your Allegra included a decongestant.

Jeffrey, you have to be careful of some antacids with other drugs.
  • No, just plain fexofenadine. I don't have any particular reflux problems most of the time.

I am sorry to hear about this. I too have my "episodes".
Tangentially, you provide another bolster to my theory on advertisement. I believe that the most cunning of the ads tout the weakest aspect of a product as the strongest. For example, "Can you hear me now" suggests the wide area a cell phone company reaches when in reality it has a narrow area. So too it seems with Allegra(meaning happy ) when
a dose can lead to sadness. There are many such examples.
