Anyone ever been to Salt Lake City?

I'm a homosexual, centre-left politically and I lean towards Buddhism; yet Salt Lake City slightly intrigues me.

I know that it is in the heart of "Mormon country", is full of Conservative Republicans and is not 100% gay friendly. However, the landscape is beautiful, not everyone is a republican or Mormon and I hear there is a pretty vibrant gay and alternative scene.

Can anybody vouch for this? I plan on moving after I finish college and SLC is a place that I'm thinking of (all things considering).

CIty Data forum is a really good forum for people considering moving or conversing with people from other cities. The discussion is lively and you get blunt honest feedback that you wouldn't find on say, the SLC chamber of commerce or something like that.
  • There are a lot of places in the American west that are just as beautiful and that *are* gay friendly. Or at least a lot more gay friendly than SLC.

"The Advocate" pegged SLC as the gayest city in the US.

I grew up about 30 mins north of SLC and eventually moved there to live. Where I used to live in Salt Lake City had a gay state representative and a lesbian state senator. The Gay pride is a pretty big event. I always used to say that where there is a majority, the minority comes together to support each other. My partner always says that no other state has more gays than Utah percentage wise... lol. I don't think that is true per se; however, there are many gays in Utah.

I never once felt threatened or unsafe in anyway and I went to gay clubs, kissed bfs in public, held hands, etc.

I think that Salt Lake is a great city, especially if you are really outdoorsy. There is so much to do so close to the city (ski resorts, hiking, rafting, camping, rock climbing, etc).

PM me if you want to talk more about whats its like to live in SLC.
