A Happy Story

Just wanted to share a quick happy story, since life is so full of grim ones. This isn't about Buddhism per se, but compassion and happy chickens.

A nearby orchard was faced with an infestation of Asian ladybeetles several years back. Somehow, one of the owners discovered that chickens are a ladybeetle's natural enemy (something to that effect), and lo and behold, a nearby chicken operation was being shut down for animal abuse.

The orchard owners rescued 1000 of the hens, and, making only the most modest of preperations--setting out feed bins and some cursory "coops" of overturned barrels and hay, simply let the chickens go in the orchard.

The health of these poor, sick, bedraggled creatures skyrocketed in indirect proportion to the size of the beetle population (I do feel sad for the beetles). In very short order, rather glossy, fat hens were now wandering through the apple orchard, and--laying thousands of eggs. Something the orchard owners, by their own admission, hadn't really thought out.

Now when people go to the orchard to buy apples, lol, they usually leave with several dozen fresh eggs as well.

Hope the story gives you a break from all the sadness in the world. Every time I'm glum, I try to remember the Orchard Chickens ;)

That's a great story. A customer of mine rescues battery egg hens and she tells me when she gets them they're in a terrible state; some almost featherless - and she loves watching them recover back to full health and be able to scratch around in the dirt and do the things that hens love doing.

Chickens are one of our most abused animal too; very sad.

Thank you Federica - sorry, I should've plunked it there in the first place!
