Loud music at bars

Question: why do bars (most, not all) blast their music so loud that it's hard to have a conversation with anyone, and it's hard for the bartender to hear your drink order. I don't get it.

So you'll focus on drinking? I don't know.

When you talk, because you can be heard, you drink less. Bars are in the business of selling booze.
    Business 101.
  • Yeah, that makes logical sense.

Now, when I can, I avoid going to bars that have music way too loud. So they lost out on my business. I'm the type who was gonna keep on drinking regardless. Sometimes I drink more because I've got a good conversation going and want to hang out longer. But that's just me.

To remind you of the precept.

Part of it is to give the impression that a good time is being had. Loud music from blocks away=sounds like fun, so more people come to the bar to look for the roaring good time. We live smack in the middle between 2 bars, and during karaoke nights we're lucky to be able to sleep before 2am.

I avoid those types of bars that blast their music like that, because I generally don't mix well with the type that frequents them. I like the quieter, hole in the wall dive bar types of places. Small, quiet-ish, a little dirty, but cheap drinks and good company. And the music they play is at a tolerable level, and actually good.

The problem with loud music is that it makes you talk louder...
A very good friend of mine called Earl Okin (fabulous performer!) has a technique that if people begin chatting during his performance, he actually gets quieter, so that people automatically also begin to lower their voices.
    Works like a charm, honestly.

That, and other members of he audience also turning round and telling them to shut the f*** up.....

    :D

That makes sense. I guess the key idea is get people in.

Hey Zayl, haven't seen u in a while. I haven't been playing minecraft much lately.

Yeah, I have the same preference in bars. Those dive bars are great. Most times the customers are nice locals who just wanna chat and vent. I frequent a local bar near my work, and the regulars are as friendly as can be, and it's like Cheers in there. So much fun to share stories, play movie trivia, and talk about the dumbest crap just because we can. Last night was Greek and Roman mythology trivia, and the Godfather Trilogy movie trivia.

Avoid bars. Or if it's summer, take a table outside.

It's summer here. You think I'm sitting outside in the freezing cold and pouring rain, think again.

Yeah, here in the UK it's summer only nominally.

Monday morning, raining, and I'm a window cleaner. I'm trying to choose some happiness here!

It's got to be the British here complaining about the weather! :D

And I've never liked bars with loud music; I'd only use them as a last resort. I remember being in a nightclub where the music was so loud, I could feel my clothes vibrate against my skin in time with the music.

But I was more of a 'prop up the bar' type of drinker; maybe the 'dancers' like the loud music?

Yep, talking can be a real distraction. :D
