According to some streams of Buddhism, it is the most important moment of your life. I tend to largely agree.
While some teachers do state that the moment of death is the most important, I would offer that this present moment is always the most important as the only one that you can actually practise in.
As long as we dont become too distracted from the focusing on the most important aspects
Agreed. Though in my experience the people who get most distracted on the rebirth question are those who have a problem with it, those who are uncomfortable with what the Buddha taught.

I wouldn't know about that.
Online the people who seem to have the biggest problem with rebirth are those ridiculing others who take a literal view of rebirth ... this ridiculing is missing the point entirely as I see it.
Here is a link I found on one of my Buddhist websites that I find very interesting since I too have had many flash backs on possible past life experiences. I don't think this video was pushing any religious agenda, only the possibility of reincarnation.
Is Reincarnation a necessary belief to be Buddhist? I personally have no belief in it at all, does this mean I would belong to a particular school of Buddhism (e.g. Theravada), is it something I can just brush off and ignore? What are your thoughts?
You can be "Buddhist" and you can brush it off. But, at the end of the day it is wrong view. It's not essential to following Dharma, but it's the noble path. All any Buddhist can really say is, "good luck in your understanding of reality." Believing is a silly thing to do. Understanding is all that matters.
Buddha never said, "believe what's right." He said to understand what's right. That's the way to enlightenment, that's the way to happiness.

I think I am, therefore I think?
