Shambhala Mountain Center update
"It has been quite a summer for Shambhala Mountain Center. Right when we were ready to kick off our busy summer season, a bolt of lightning triggered the High Park fire, which burnt 87,284 acres and destroyed 259 homes before being contained by a massive fire-fighting effort put forth by local, state and federal resources, as well as our own staff. Responding to a “pre-evacuation” notice for County Road 68C, where Shambhala Mountain Center is located, all program guests and the majority of staff were evacuated. A small fire crew remained on the land, while other staff relocated to the Fort Collins and Boulder areas. The Fort Collins Center Director and community welcomed us with open arms, letting our staff stay in their homes. The Boulder Shambhala Center and Naropa University opened their hearts and spaces to support several programs and even our operational needs.
Our operations were seriously impacted but we are so grateful that no structures or land within SMC’s acreage were affected. Throughout this experience, well wishes, prayers and expressions of warmth and humor poured into us from all directions. Reflecting back on all the experience and all the people directly involved in fighting the fire to help others—saving homes and lives—one truly feels basic goodness manifesting in full bloom.
We have been back at SMC for a week now, and just finished a three-day staff retreat. We are working on reestablishing some of the basic infrastructure, in particular, phones and internet, as well as getting ready to welcome participants back on the land in August."
