No Sangha

edited August 2012 in Buddhism Basics
There is nothing close to me that resembles a buddhist sangha, save one, but I simply do not feel comfortable there so I have long given up going to it.

Does anyone have any recommendations as what to do in this situation? I'm a relative noobie and I feel like I should at least have someone to show me the ropes.

  • newbuddhist is a great sangha!

it doesn't replace real human interaction though, thats where it all gets juicy!!

just practice your best, read and keep an open mind.

then one day you'll realize that the sangha is your whole dimension.

Reading as much as you can is helpful, especially if it comes from monks (for instance I've read material from Bhikkhu Bodhi and Ajahn Chah). You'll want to have a decent basic understanding of the teachings (sites like http://www.BuddhaNet.net are also good, with a Basic Buddhism Guide and Online Study Guide), and also some instruction on a meditation technique.

From there it's about putting the teachings into practice, which will bring a more full understanding through your own efforts. Many people, especially in the USA, don't have teachers and have to make do with what they do have (and luckily there's a lot of free material on the internet). Fortunately a teacher isn't a necessity, though it's good to have one if you can. This reality stays the same no matter what, so as long as the mind is looking in the right direction long enough...
