If the French really were like that, more people would live there.
Lovely film... not, however, indicative of my personal experience with them.

    Sad to say.....

  • Everyone is different- people first nationality, race, sex, age and everything is secondary to our basic humanity. Not to say there aren't patterns, of course.
    ...
    Amelie = great film.

Was Amelie supposed to be representative of the French, or just a quirky personality? All cultures have quirky personalities and idealistic youth.

  • I didn't get that movie at all. Nice soundtrack though :)
  • Great movie, great soundtrack. Is that kind of weird movie that make you feel a little enlightened when you finish it. Some cinema critics says that this movie resembles some Buddhists topics.
  • I loved it the fist time i saw it because it's quirky and original, but on the second viewing it's kind of sickly sweet.

I found "The City of Lost Children" and "Delicatessen," which are by the same director, to be more to my taste - a bit darker in thier subject matter. Definately worth watching these if you enjoyed Amelie.

    Really?
It would be nice if you could find a quote on that..... !

What a horrible thing to say. Some French people are nice, some are not just like everyone else in the world.

I didn't say French people aren't nice. I said the French aren't that way.

I lived in France for a very long time, and while as individuals they are lovely and charm personified, collectively they have a very 'closed-rank' mentality, to the point of almost being xenophobic.
They're bureaucratic, officious and care absolutely not a jot for any problems or issues you might be experiencing in those areas - if you're not French.
I was told more times than I can remember, by some in official positions - "Madame, si ca vous ne plais pas, il y a toujours l'Angleterre..."

"Madam, if you don't like it, there's always England..." In other words - if you don't like it, go home.
The clasic Gallic shrug, accompanied by that little chin thrust, didn't mean "I don't have a clue."
    It meant "I don't give a damn."

I saw it gestured more times than I can comfortably remember.

My British step-mother-in-law adopted French nationality 20 years ago, in order to be more accepted, to make it easier for her to work and integrate. She and my FiL have lived in France for more than 30 years.
The neighbours still call them 'Les Foux Anglais".

Each country has its reputations. Some deserved, others exaggerated, and others again, completely mistaken.
We're talking about France though, and as one who tried hard to establish herself in its way of life - and failed - I can speak from experience.

Fine, we'll leave it there then and not risk going completely O/T.
  • Hmm, I suppose there's a borg mentality in every 'nation'

    Interesting

I think you're absolutely right, there is, but having lived in 5 countries in my life - for prolonged periods of time - I can honestly say, hand on heart that in my direct personal experience, the French are Masters at it.

  • I just watched this movie yesterday thanks to this thread ;)

Was interesting the way it was made. I really liked Amelie
  • Have you made any observations about the British culture? If so, I would be interested to hear them! @federica x

I have made countless observations about British Culture.
    But that's off topic.

You were happy to go off topic with the French, why the sudden change of heart?

Besides, to be right fair, what honestly is there to say on a topic titled 'amelie really kicks my heart all into goo goo?'.

The question is how do you manage to stay on topic with a title like this?

Sure, here is one quote that I read some time ago:

" If, at one time or other in your life, you have felt the overwhelming freedom associated with an unannounced, fleeting, yet direct connection with all of humanity, you probably felt liberated watching "Amélie." It's a powerful feeling of being present that reduces power itself, as well as the likes of the current fad of anal-retentive devotion to share portfolios, to just another pathetic illusion. Buddhism would call this momentary connection a first step on the path to enlightenment, and that, for me, is the ultimate message of "Amélie": Come out of your protective cocoon to embrace The Other and you will be free."

@ArthurBodhi, thank you for that!

@ownerof1000oddsocks, how is talking about my experience of living in France, in a topic discussing a french film about someone's living in France, going O/T?
  • Never mind then, I was trying to be friendly that's all @federica x x

    no problem.
We can discuss it via PM, if you want to continue.... Up to you. :)
  • Very cool movie. And very inspiring. I was inspired to live a braver life, and go out and have adventures. I should watch it again. I forget a lot of the details now.
