Thought and Feeling

Many people like to describe thought as brain and feeling as heart. And I've read a few writing saying that they both come from brain, some mentioned from the whole body and some other mentioned from the heart.

During my meditation practise, I can sometimes feel that all those thoughts and feelings are struggling around my forehead. Is it mean they come from the brain?

Or is it really located in a specific body organ?

Thoughts are generated in the brain. Physical impulses and reactions are felt elsewhere, because there are similar cellular clusters to the brain, in other organs.
Remember 'Mind' is also there, but Mind is not the same as 'Brain'.

Our main sense organs are located in our head which I think is why it seems like this.
  • If thoughts are from the brain, how about feeling?

Hmm... And talking about mind. How is it different from thought? Or thought is part of the mind?

Brain is mechanical, biological, electrical impulses, neurons, etc.
    Mind is ephemeral, subtle, ever-changing....

    This is what needs taming.
  • Can I suggest that you google " skandhas" ? The traditional Buddhist view of mind and body is different in some respects to our western view of such things. In Buddhism the body is seen as a constantly changing process that arises as a result of certain conditions, and "mind" is divided into various functions..rather than a "thing". So for instance it includes consciousness and perception. It is of great benefit to learn a little of the terminology to aid discussion.

The suggestion is that human reality is built by the brain's function - how other organs (or systems) contribute is not clear - on current thinking it appears that 'thoughts' emanate from the brain - that said, the brain is aware of your body's functions and there are feedback loops - how these influence 'thought' (if at all) is unclear.
