Trijang Rinpoche Is Back!
One of the most highly attained Tibetan Buddhist Masters is Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche (1900 - 1981) who amongst his many high accomplishments include being the mentor and junior tutor to the present and 14th Dalai Lama. Trijang Rinpoche took the Dalai Lama from the most elementary level right up to the highest Tantric transmissions and was also a close friend and fatherly figure to the Dalai Lama.
In fact Trijang Rinpoche was so influential and reveredthat it is said that there is no Gelugpa master today who is not directly or indirectly connected to Trijang Rinpoche as a student. So attained was this master that it was said that he was one with Vajrayogini.
But Trijang Rinpoche is also a high practitioner of Dorje Shugden, an emanation of Manjushri whose worship the Dalai Lama banned, claiming that the Buddhist deity is but a malicious spirit. The new reincarnation of Trijang Rinpoche, Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche was put into such a difficult position to either abandon the Shugden practice and be accused of breaking his samaya with his Guru Pabonka Rinpoche, or to keep the practice and go against the Dalai Lama. Trijang Choktrul chose to leave the monastery instead and the Buddhist world lost the personification of the enlightened Buddha mind.
But it seemed Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche never left the Dharma or the practice at all and finally he has resurfaced to turn the wheel of Dharma again. It appears you cannot separate the Buddha from the Dharma.
