The Contemplation/Visualization of Amitayus Sutra

I've just completed re-reading this sutra for a presentation, and it got me to wondering if anyone actually has mastered all of the visualizations described in it. There are 13 and they range from the simplistic to the extremely intricate. I wonder if anyone in this day and age can claim a mastery over these visualization practices.

The sutra itself is quite the interesting read, and I encourage anyone interested in Pure Land Buddhism to check it out. Many people in the West think that Pure Land is all about nianfo/nembutsu, but there's so much more to it.

  • Oh, I should have probably asked a question. lol

Do you think that there is anyone capable of such intricate visualizations?
  • Yes but usually its not emphasized.

In Tantric/Vajrayana Buddhism the use of visualization is used, which is linked with energy and then physical form.

It is like a muscle one works with. But generally most people don't even learn to visualize. Even in Buddhism it is considered day dreaming and it is shunned/avoided.

Anyways I've been working with visualization for a long time. Not for practice but rather for artistic purposes. At first the images are cloudy but with time the imagery gets clearer.

There are also individuals who I've come in contact with that can actively engage their mind in the visualization style of computer aided drafting. With all the wireforms and all.
