I've seen this in a couple Japanese films like in Akira Kurosawa's Dodes'ka-Den the mother is seen clanging these together while she chants. Right in the beginning:

As I recall they can also be seen in Akira Kurosawa's film "Yojimbo". To clarify I want to know what they're called.

    Could they be hyoshigi?

  • Those are some great clappers! Never get a good enough look at them to figure out exactly how they're put together.

Thank you !!! I've been looking for the name but I couldn't find it. Also found an from a Nichiren sect called "Honmon Butsuryu Shu" talking about the clappers. I also figured out that the things the priest is strike together in the beginning to produce sparks are steel and flint. Wonder what the steel and flint are called in Japanese..
