My oh so wonderful day yesterday...

edited November 2006 in General Banter
...so where to start. How about the beginning. At 7:30am I attended my weekly BNI business group meeting. Felt good, got a few referrals, passed out a couple referrals, etc. Got back to my office and put in some quote requests, etc. I left to go back home to get my cell phone which I forgot at home in my haste to make it to the meeting on time. My wife mentioned that I needed to get to my daughter's school to pay for a field trip she was going on and pass the permission slip in. On my way I got pulled over by a police officer and here's where the REAL fun begins.... Here's some background on what led up to this...

A couple years ago a friend of mine was joining the military. In order to fulfill one of his wishes before going I put together a local concert at a senior center here. I had to seek approval with the Selectmens office, and actually attended a meeting to get the approval from the town. One of the stipulations was that I hire a police detail, this way nothing got "out of control". So anyway, the event went as was planned and it was a great time. All monies owed for the rental and the detail were paid OR SO I THOUGHT.

After the event I moved down south for a while. I changed mailing addresses a few times and this is where I think the problem comes into play. The town I got the detail from must have had a few minutes overtime, which was about $23. Supposedly they sent me the bill, I never received said bill more than likely due to moving so much. So let's fast forward to yesterday...

The officer walks up to my car. "Is this your car?" said the officer. "Yes it is Sir" I reply. "Nathan, did you know there is a warrant for your arrest" he asks. "No sir I am totally unaware of this and it is quite a shock. What can you and I come up with to squash this mess." I say to the officer. "Unfortunatly Nathan it is an arrestable warrant and my hands are tied, I have to take you into custody" he says. Without arguing more I get out of the car, am handcuffed and led into a police cruiser. My car is then tossed and he acts like he is looking for something, which of course he doesn't find because I don't get involved in anything illegal ever. My car is then towed and I am brought to the station where I am booked, photographed (I have many tattoos so they made me strip to photograph each one) and finally I was led to a cell until a car could be made available to bring me to court. I am then approached by a detective who handles break-ins and other similar crimes. He asks me if I may know of anything and if so he will help me in return. I honestly tell him I don't know of anything, again I try to refrain from knowing people that have any sort of criminal history so as not to ever get wrapped up in it. The car becomes available and off to court I go. Again, I am handcuffed, brought into a holding cell under the court. Oh wait, before getting into the cell I am shackled on my legs as well. Finally I am called upstairs to see the judge. He says I have 24 hours to go to the OTHER court where the supposed offense is being dealt with. Rather than wait I decided to take care of this immediatly. My wife picks me up, brings me to my car, I pay $90 to get it out of impound. I proceed to my daughters school to take care of the field trip stuff and head off to the OTHER court. The judge there basically laughs at the whole situation and asks if I have the cash on me to cover the $23 mess, of course I do judge where do I pay? I pay it and that's that.

I decide, screw this I'm not going to let this day get to me and I went to see a client for work. He gave me two jobs to quote, one that will print right away. So eve after spending most of my day in handcuffes and shackles in some sort of cell I managed to drum up enough work to pay for my day and make my company a little money. But it was a rough day I promise you all that....

Oh, man, LFA -- that's rough! I don't even know what to say about it all! It's completely ridiculous, unbelievable! But good for you for keeping cool and getting through it, and not letting it get to you -- I think it says something important about your character: patient, strong, and altogether awesome! Here's hoping that better luck is on the way!

Thanks for the post rambling. I could not let the situation get the best of me you're right on that. Had I let it I prolly would have flew off the handle and ended up in real trouble. But when I got taken into custody and went into the first cell I was by myself. I got myself comfortable and contemplated the situtation. I realized that I had no control of it, except to stay in mental control and not bury myself any farther. This practice has taught me alot. I would not have handled the situation like this a couple years ago...

Holy shit, LFA! (sorry) That is so totally intense and crazy!! I can't believe it. It's insane! Holy crap!! I can't believe how incredibly well you handled the situation! I mean, my god, you were amazing! I bet the cops wished that everyone they had to pick up was like you. "Well done" doesn't even cover the half of it. I'm truly amazed and so completely awed by what you did. Amazing. Really, incredibly amazing! You deserve a HUGE congratulations for how you handled yourself and how you handled your mind. It really IS all about the mind, isn't it? Yours is pretty damned well trained. Way....to.....go!!!

It kinda makes me wish I would get arrested on a false charge to see whether I could behave in the same way as you....!!

    Could I keep my cool?
Could I be Compassionate, Wise and Loving?

Brigid: Thanks for the reply and the words. I'm not sure if the situation was "amazing" but more so knowing that if I acted out I would have to deal with consequences I really didn't want to deal with. I really try to behave in this manner as much as possible, but being human it is quite difficult most of the time.

Like mentioned in a post above, if this had happened sometime ago the end result would have turned out way different. This practice has helped me more than I could ever have hoped. When certain events happen I try to reflect on why or how the events have come to fruition. Hell, all the crazy stuff that has been happening has to do with some unskillful action I have made in the past. Without looking much farther into I realized that past karma is coming out and I have to deal with the things I have done. Maybe by acting in a skillful manner I can create some sort of merit that may some day flourish and create something positive either in this life or the next. I really don't know what I would have done had I never started on the middle path. And honestly I have to say everyone here has helped me stay on it and made sense of the things that I had a hard time with. Thank you all for helping me to be the better person I am becoming. Thank you!!!

Fede: I think you'd handle the situation in a very like manner. But you never know till it happens.

Actually, to a probably lesser extent, we all come across trying situations every day, without realising it....
It may be a mark of how far we have worked to develop our Compassion and Understanding, to observe how much less such trials affect us now, in comparison to previous times....
But your experience was extreme, so my above comment is not designed to take anything away from that. :winkc:

Your story reminds me of an old Buddhist story I once heard, LFA.

An old lama lived by himself out in the forest. He was a very advanced practitioner, but because he remained to himself, no one knew who he was or what he was doing out there. One day a neighboring farmer came to the lama's place with some policemen. He pointed at the lama, and shouted, "Arrest him! He killed and ate my cow!"

The policemen looked confused and reluctant to do anything, but the farmer insisted. Someone had killed and eaten his cow, and so someone had to pay for it! So the policemen finally had no choice but to arrest the lama and take him to jail. The lama said nothing in his own defense, even though the charge was ludicrous as he was a strict vegetarian. So the police took him to jail, and he remained locked up until a judge could come to town to try him. All the time the old lama remained silent, working his mala quietly in his cell and seeming quite content, despite the obvious injustice of his predicament.

Finally some students of his found out what had happened and came to the jail. They pleaded with the lama to speak out in his defense so that they could see that the charges were ridiculous and let him go. But the lama remained silent, praying in his cell.

Finally the judge came to town and called the lama before him. When the lama came into court, a large crowd from the village gathered, many of whom were upset at the way the lama was being treated. When the judge asked if anyone had any knowledge of the case and wished to speak, a villager spoke up and said that about the time of the crime he had come upon three itinerants feasing on what appeared to be a dead cow. The three had chased the villager off before he could get too curious. Then one of the lama's students spoke up and said that it was impossible for the lama to have committed this act as he was not only a strict vegetarian and a highly realized practitioner, but he never wandered from his home. The judge agreed that the charges were ludicrous and ordered the lama to be immediately freed. He then proceeded to fine the farmer who had brought the charges for bearing false witness and causing the lama undue troubles.

After the trial, the lama's students approached the lama and asked him why he had remained silent when all he would have had to do was speak in his own defense to stay out of jail. The lama smiled and explained that while he knew he was innocent of killing the farmer's cow, in a previous life he had killed a cow and eaten it and had never been caught. Therefore he saw the incident as a way of working off this negative karma, so in his mind it was a good thing to have happened. The students all saw the wisdom of their teacher and prostrated to him.

Maybe that's what happened to you, LFA! Whadya think?

    Palzang,

Oh, I am certain it has to do with some sort of negative karma I have. Unfortunatly I've made some mistakes in my past and this is the way it goes. That's also a big part of why I didn't freak out either, I knew I was paying the price for something. Thanks for the story.
