Business in human beings ( slavery ) and business in intoxicants are about non-harm, the other three are about not killing.

The first precept deals with undertaking not to destroy life, while the 10th precept deals with accepting gold and silver (money).

The Dhammapada (v.129-130) mentions this practice:

All living beings are terrified of punishment; all fear death.
Putting oneself in the place of others one should neither kill nor cause to kill.

All living beings are terrified of punishment; all love life.
Putting oneself in the place of others one should neither kill nor cause to kill.

Let's not forget that a large chunk of the 8-fold path is concerned with transforming our behaviour in a more skillful direction.

    Hi, @Cook99!
Time to chime in and give us your piece of mind....?
  • so, if i tell a fellow buddhist it is against the 1st precept to kill animals,
then I am doing something wrong ?

  • sure, under extreme circumstances, i would even eat human meat.
but realistically how often would you be faced with such a choice?
eat human meat or die of starvation.

Thankfully, I've never been in an aeroplane crash and landed in inaccessible mountains. Hope that will ALWAYS be a theoretical question for me - as I do whether I would kill to defend my kids ....

Yes. It's none of your business what they do. I'm sure you do wrong things, but that's up to you to address. You don't act as judge and critic of others.

    Foolish and pointless question.
Until you do, it's not worth thinking about.
    Tell us when you do.
    THEN we might comment.

Not necessarily, it depends on the situation and your intention in saying such things. :)

The criteria for deciding what is worth saying

[2] "In the case of words that the Tathagata knows to be factual, true, unbeneficial, unendearing & disagreeable to others, he does not say them.

[3] "In the case of words that the Tathagata knows to be factual, true, beneficial, but unendearing & disagreeable to others, he has a sense of the proper time for saying them.
