Taking the precepts

edited November 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I will finally be taking the precepts on July 3 at the Toronto Zen Centre, after 10 years of studying the dharma in private (I have not joined a sangha because I have moved around so much, but I did one retreat years ago in the U.S.). I will post my observations after the ceremony.

Any posters out there who have taken the precepts, I would like to hear your views on the experience.

Thanks, Brian...I'm also happy to answer any questions your members may have about my decision to take the precepts.

Nice site btw - I just found it today.

I have taken the eight precepts before. they are not so bad, especially if you don't think about them. just go through your day normally.

By taking the precepts, you mean doing so publicly before a monk, right? Many Buddhists "take the precepts" every day as a reaffirmation of their intentions, since it's really an internal commitment regardless of ritual or ceremony.
