In Northern Buddhism at least, Shakyamuni Buddha was considered to be the fourth Buddha of this fortunate aeon of a total of 1002. So Maitreya is simply the next Buddha. "Buddha" in this meaning means one who brings the Dharma into the world when it has disappeared, just as Shakyamuni did. In other words, Maitreya will appear long after all memory of Dharma has disappeared form this world. So if you meet anybody claiming to be Maitreya Buddha (and there are quite a few of them around), just turn around and head the other way as fast as you can!
