Iluminating relics

edited May 2008 in Buddhism Today
Hi all - I just wanted to share this email i got from the maitreya project:

Dear friends,

We have inspiring news from the Maitreya Project Heart Shrine Relic Tour.

Occasionally, during Relic Tour events around the world, some of the relics have spontaneously illuminated with their own light shining from within them. Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave the following advice when, on 29 March 2008, during a Relic Tour event in Taipei, Taiwan, a relic of Lama Tsongkhapa began self- illuminating.

The same day, more relics began emitting light: the relics of Lama Atisha, Geshe Chekawa, Geshe Lama Konchog, Longchenpa, Marpa, Milarepa, and Kasyapa. The following day the Lama Tsongkhapa relic continued to shine brilliantly.

Rinpoche was contacted by phone. He explained that the buddhas emanate in the form of relics and communicate with us by illuminating – just like talking to us. When more than one relic illuminates at the same time it shows they are the same in their essence – they all are the emanations of the absolute guru, the dharmakaya [omniscient mind of a buddha]. Rinpoche also said that relics illuminate in the presence of people who have the special karma to see it, and that it is very powerful to pray when relics illuminate. Rinpoche then dictated the following practices and dedications to be recited when relics illuminate.

Since the illuminations in Taiwan, the Relic Tour travelled to South Korea, where the relic of Lama Tsongkhapa continued to emit golden light.

Several photographs of the relics illuminating were sent to Rinpoche and on viewing them he immediately began prostrating.

A full article about this and other inspiring relic phenomena is planned for Mandala magazine.

Please scroll down to see a photo of the illuminating Lama Tsongkhapa relic and read Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s advice, as well as Rinpoche’s message to the Relic Tour.

Love,
Linda

“The very name ‘maitri’ means ‘loving-kindness’... in today’s world, we really need maitri, Maitreya, loving-kindness.”

I wasn't able to post the picture - sorry. But I found the article inspiring

I don't quite understand. The Maitreya Project is all about benefitting the poor population of that area. Bringing healthcare, education and in time a lot of jobs, when more visitors from around the world come to visit.
One of the main reasons this area was selected, was because it was one of the poorest areas in india, and therefore the area who was in greatest need of a lift in economy, education and healthcare.

I'm sure that theres a misunderstanding somewhere - but to be certain, I have sent a mail to my teacher in the fpmt, to see what he has to say about it.

    With big love

There is no misunderstanding. Those organising and funding the project never consulted the farmers, and assumed everyone would be happy.
The farmers are not receiving suitable or adequate compensation.
The situation is disastrous, and the organisers have failed to singularly respond to the questions posed to them.

Please understand, Allan, I am in no way criticisng you, or holding you responsible for this - !
I am merely presenting "The other side of the coin"... In any development or project such as this one, there are bound to be those who 'lose out'... In this case, the loss is really quite enormous.
