He said in his book "No death, No fear" that you practice impermanence in order to reach Nirvana and overcome fear of death.

How do we practice something like this?

Take any object of focus and think about if it can really last forever. What you consider to be your car is actually impermanent. It will eventually break down and rust away. So will your house and everything you consider to be yours. This also applies to life. We are born, we age, we grow ill, and we die. Our feelings and emotions are also impermanent. One moment you may be happy and the next it will fade away and be replaced by sadness. Nothing last forever, once we come to terms with this and truly understand this we find there is no real reason to allow ourselves to become attached to things and without this desire and attachment there is no suffering from loss. Therefore we find peace.

    The meditation way to contemplate impermanence is to begin with observing your breathing. In-breath comes in & stops, out-breath goes out & ends, new in-breath comes in & stops, new out-breath goes out & ends.

    Continue the above observation until the breath & mind become more clear & refined. Until in conjuction with the above exercise, there is new awareness arising with the in-breath, ending into new awareness arising with the out-breath.
