Tibetan sand mandala

Currently at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria we have a five monks from the Ganden Jangtse Monatery in South India creating a sand mandala. Watching them painstakingly place the coloured sand in the proper pattern is a joy to behold. On October 23, when they will have completed the mandala, it will be swept up and we will form a procession to carry it to the sea, where it will be sent in to the Straight of Juan de Fuca, with our blessings.

    It's wonderful to watch, isn't it, Barra. I've been lucky enough to see it twice: once at Mont St Michel in Normandy and then at Glastonbury.

    There is a beautiful film of it at the beginning of Martin Scorcese's film about HHDL, Kundun.
