The Lazy Man’s Guide To Enlightenment

edited December 2009 in Buddhism Basics
Have any of you read The Lazy Man’s Guide To Enlightenment by Thaddeus Golas? Wikipedia describes it as "a classic book on human consciousness and spirituality" as well as mentioning that "It has been described many times as "The last book you'll ever need to read on Spirituality"."

What do you make of this?

I was gonna pick it up, but didn't feel like getting up to go to the store.

I've been in the store, and seen it right in front of me on the shelf, and thought "Some day I'll buy that," but never got around to it.

    Literally true. :-)

Thaddeus Golas is a lazy man. Laziness keeps him from believing that enlightenment demands effort, discipline, strict diet, non-smoking and other evidences of virtue. He found a way to enlighten himself - and you - with two sentences.

Huh. Well, you can find a free copy of this book right here then: http://newbuddhist.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3953
If I knock at your door, I am on your doorstep.
If I walk up to your door, I will be on your doorstep.
If I am never on your doorstep, I will never be knocking on your door.
If I stop being on your doorstep, I will stop knocking your door.

Albeit, this version took four sentences. But nevertheless, how does it feel to be "enlightened"? From his book:
There is an odd chance that this is what someone needs to read in order to feel better about himself. If you are a kind person and want to know what to expect when enlightenment strikes and why it comes to you, with or without psychedelic help, this is for you.

 The book is far removed from Buddhadhamma. If you really want to read it: http://freespace.virgin.net/sarah.peter.nelson/lazyman/lazyman1.html

    sambodhi,

Thanks for sharing this interesting article.

I especially enjoyed this quote: “If you can’t find it where you’re standing, where do you hope to run in search of it?”

It seemed that he came close to describing what some have coined, “Spiritual Materialism.” Which he, like myself, was against.

Do you own a copy of the book, yourself?

If so, do you have some favorite ideas that are within it that you wish to share?

    Warm Regards,
    S9
