The Five Sciences

edited December 2009 in Philosophy
The Ornament of the Mahayana Sutras (Skt. Mahayanasutralankara, one of the five treatises of Maitreya) states.

If efforts are not made in the five sciences
Even great Arya beings will not attain omniscience.
Therefore, to refute and to nourish,
and to attain omniscience, make effort in the five sciences.

I find the discussion of the five sciences to be particularly interesting and relevant to "modern-day bodhisattva's". The five sciences are, inner science (Buddhism), logic, language, medicine/healing, and art.
Often times we feel that our pursuits other than the inner science of Buddhism are distractions or somehow not wholesome, however, as the above quote and many more state, this is not the case. Bodhisattvas, use art, medicine, language and logic as tools to benefit beings and they are essential tools.
So all you doctors and artists out there should get back to work already.
peace

For they too are gatherers of fruit and frankincense, and that which they bring, though fashioned of dreams, is raiment and food for your soul."
