New Year's Eve Party for World Peace!

To all my friends at newbuddhist!

I want to invite you all to a very special New Year's Eve party tomorrow night. No, you don't have to bring anything. You don't even have to leave home. Tomorrow at 7:00 PM EST (Greenwich Mean Time -5) you have the opportunity to join fellow Buddhists (and non-Buddhists) around the world in a special practice for world peace.

All you have to do is go to Twitter (if you don't have an account yet - is that possible?! - just go to twitter.com and sign up for one - it's very easy) and follow @ahkonlhamo. That's my teacher, and she will be leading the practice. We're going to do three 7-line prayer (get here), which is how we open all practices, followed by a very brief, concise Amitabha practice (get here), followed by a dedication prayer. Good way to end the old year and ring in the next!

The dedication prayer is:

By this effort, may all sentient beings be free of suffering.
May their minds be filled with the nectar of virtue.
May all causes resulting in suffering be extinguished,
and only the light of compassion shine throughout all realms.

The 7-line prayer and the Amitabha practices both include explanations of the practice by Jetsunma, and the 7-line prayer has audio recordings of her chanting the prayer so you can get used to how it sounds.

Hope to see you all there!

BTW, this is not a one-time event. Jetsunma says she wants to do it daily.

It seemed to go well, though the problem with Twitter is that you can't really tell how many people are joining in unless they tell you. But it continues, every evening at 7:00 PM EST for anyone interested in joining in. Only takes about 15 minutes.

An update: Yesterday one of our elderly anis (nuns) had heart surgery to repair a leaky valve. She's in her 80s so major surgery like that is very risky. Everything went very smoothly, but yesterday evening she began to experience arrythmia, her blood pressure started falling, and she was having difficulty breathing. Not good signs! So we dedicated our 7:00 practice to her strong health. About 10 minutes after we began the practice, the arrythmia disappeared, her blood pressure returned to normal, and her breathing difficulties ceased. Now she is doing great and making jokes! Prayer does work, sports fans...
