Tibetan Buddhist groups?

edited January 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hi everyone,

I've just turned 23, and finished uni, and I just joined this forum. I hope it's ok to just jump right in, but, I'm right now just learning about Buddhism, although, I've been interested in it for awhile now, but, I'm really reading more about it now, and I'm kind of interested in learning a lot more about Tibetan Buddhism, and I was just wondering, does anyone know of any good centers in the UK, particularly London, as that's where I'm from?.

I'm looking forward to, hopefully, talking and getting to know more of you.

Thanks for any help :).

David.

Do you only follow tibetan buddhism? Im 19 and I attend a Theravada Buddhist meditation group in Richmond (south west london i think). It focuses on Samatha/Vippassana meditation, using concentration, mindfulness and wisdom. It also uses loving-kindness meditation.

You do a group meditation, then you have a one to one with the teacher. Very helpful

That might actually be very helpful for me actually, where abouts is it in Richmond (it would really be great for me, I live quite near Richmond, by train anyway, I'm in Acton).

Thanks for both your replies :).

Would this be of any use?

    Hi David,

I have heard from a friend that the Richmond samatha group connected to the Theravada Thai Forest tradition (which was mentioned by Elliott) is very good. It certainly sounds worth checking it out if you live nearby.

If you're interested in Tibetan Buddhism, this is an excellent centre, and the sangha there are really friendly and helpful. The resident lama is a western woman with many years of experience, and there are regular visits from both western and Tibetan teachers :

Thanks for the help, I definitely want to go to the Richmond centre, as it is quite easy to get too.

Also, thanks for the Tibetan Buddhist link, that looks like something I might be interested in too :).

BTW, is that Thai Forest tradition the same tradition Jack Kornfield (author of 'Path With a Heart' and other books) belongs too? (I'm just asking as I brought his book 'Path With A Heart', at least, I think that's the one I brought).

    Thanks again to everyone :).

    David.
